Merely a matter of 'tradition' according to the company.

10's were fitted years ago so vintage style guitars carry 10's as a matter of authenticity.

9's are considered a 'neutral' gauge and more player friendly, thus they are going on newer instruments.

When I saw the discussion about sting gauge a couple of days ago....I contacted Fender (with the link CA Feathers posted) and they told me (via email) that the American Fenders came stock with 9 gauge.
