Many people, including myself, think that the mexican standard pups are quite nice. Maybe you should try raising or lower the pickups, and see if that makes it better. It's worth a try.

I'm no pickup expert, but I would suggest the Fender 57/62. Check them out!

I agree, MIM pickups are fine. You should probably look at what type of sound you actually want to achieve before you decide it's the pickups.

I would say it's more the amp than the pups
i have a MIM and my friend has a older MIA,
and over the same amp you can't tell the difference.

Hi 45rt66t: couple of suggestions. First, you could try changing how your pickups sound by adjusting the height screws at either end of each of them. If you turn the screws anti-clockwise the pickups will sink lower into the pickguard. Doing that will decrease their output so you will have to turn up the volume on the guitar and/or amp to compensate. However, taking them lower will also increase sustain, and it sounds like that is what you want.

Far as swapping in new pickups is concerned. We don't know what sort of music you want to play, though "clean/delay" maybe suggests surf or rockabilly. For those sorts of sounds you probably want traditional low output Fender pickups with a '50s or early '60s type spec - that means something with an output in the 5.9 - 7K range and AlNiCo magnets, probably AlNiCo Vs.. Fender make nice examples themselves and so do all the other aftermarket makers. I'm not going to waste time naming models because there's too many to shake a stick at: just search for words like '50s, '60s, vintage, alnico V and similar and you will be on the right track.

I'm a big fan of the Fender American pickups in a MIM Strat. That way it will always sound like the real deal. Since 2008 I have noticed a great improvement in the MIM's. They are probably on a par with Leo's original product as far as quality goes.

I too thought they sucked, that is until I replaced the tremolo assy from the zinc mim one with a steel one, now I like it.

I really dig the MIM Deluxe Player Strat with the Vintage Noiseless Pickups (although I think I read somewhere that these pickups are/were actually made in USA?)
All I know is I play "pure clean/delay sound" too...sort of a Hank Marvin, surf, Jimmy Wilsey kind of sound and I like the "noiseless-ness" of the pickups. The cleaner I play, the less inherent noise I want from the pickups. Some say the VN pups are a little lack-luster sounding, but I disagree.
And I don't know what type of bridge block I have...whatever it came with I guess!
I think the MIM strats are pretty nice guitars, all things considered!

Hi! I have several MIM Strats. I like the Fender Fat Strat & Hot Texas pickups.
Whether you like the pickups or not, it is fun to try others.
Demarzio's are good. Stacked humbuckers are good.
Lace Sensors are good. Seymour Duncans are good.
Guitar Fetish is real good http://www.guitarfetish.com/GFS-Guitar-Pickups_c_7.html

Do you want single coil or humbuckers?
Check YouTube for sound/tone comparisons.
What sounds good to you may or may not be good for another.
Good luck. Toppscore 8)

By the way . . . . MIA MIM MIJ Fender Pickups,
really have good reputations during the past decade.

Also, the name brand competitors are good as well.
Competitors need to be good to draw customers out to
remove their current pickups and install a new brand.

And, as one of the posters mentioned, pedals & amp controls DO make a difference

Usually a good setup will fix those problems.

Changing the block in one of my MIM strats to a brass one really made her sing. A lot easier to do than to rewire new pickups, pots, caps etc.

I agree. Personally, I've been having a pro setup
several of my guitars during the past month.
One guitar, my Fender Telecaster, had several issues.

When I went to pick-up the Tele, when he handed the axe to me,
I grabbed it by the neck/fretboard near the bolts with my left hand.
It was amazing as I could feel instantly with one "outstretched hand"
that the set-up felt so different and in a great way. Actually, they removed
a shim underneath the neck and the action was awesome.
BTW, we jammed out of a little eight inch Fender Frontman amp . . . . .
I could not wait to get that guitar home.

The set-up made a huge difference ~ from not liking or enjoying the Tele
to having a whole new positive experience with "a new guitar" :)

Remember that sustain has a lot to do with body construction, metal parts, string contact point and you playing style. I'm not sure pups are the real problem. A pup will sound as long as the string is vibrating.
