Just bought a brand new Fender Deluxe Players Stratocaster and the String Tree screw is loose so that if I removed the strings it would flop around. I would say there's at least a 1/16" of the screw shank exposed.

I'm afraid that if I bend B & E too much the screw will be pulled out of the wood thus stripping out the wooden threads.

Is this normal or should I tighten it down snugly?

I'd prefer a Fender employees response, however any experienced Fender players comments are welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Leave it alone, that is how it's supposed to be on a vintage style string tree.

Vintage aside, From a functionality standpoint would it be better for it to float as it does(loose) or be rigid(tightened). Of course I'm asking from an "ALL THINGS CONSIDERED" standpoint, i.e., tuning stability, angle off the nut, and any other items I neglected to consider.

Thanks!

It shoud be a touch loose but not flopping all over the place, nor should it be tight. If you have either extreme, it will cause tuning problems.

Tighten it down with a "sharp", quality "0" point phillips... the Klein brand is great and is available at the The Home Depot.

Don't strip the screw head or over tighten and strip the wood. Doubt that you'll need to, but drill if necessary. It is supposed to be tight to the face of the headstock.

BTW - I own the deluxe player in sunburst and love it... congrats on your fine taste in guitars!
