One of my favorite guitarists plays a strat exclusively through Mesa amps. I am shocked by the sounds he can accomplish, all with single coils.

If it's Guns & Roses which you are particularly interested in playing then perhaps a Humbucker-equipped guitar would be better suited for the task, but it's apples and oranges really.

I am confident though that you can play about anything on a stratocaster.

Check out the video posted to this link for the versatility of a Strat:

http://www.chicagomusicexchange.com/100riffs/

This guy who works for Chicago Music Exchange does 100 riffs in a single take (runs about 12 minutes) all done on a '58 Strat. Runs the gamut from Chet Atkins to the Black Keys in chronological order; even the riffs you normally think of as "humbucker" riffs like Sweet Child O Mine, Crazy Train, and Back in Black sound pretty good on the Strat (well, plus his pedalboard). Pretty impressive to watch him switch to drop D and back on the fly to do this in one take.

I don't think that the OUTPUT of a Metal Zone MT-2 depends a whole lot on what guitar is plugged into the INPUT side. 8)

Ain't that the truth.

The same could be said for a Roland Cube 60!

Never wrong to play any type of music on any guitar, certain songs may work better on certain guitars, but if you are happy with the sound that you can get, go for it and enjoy.

A+ Look at Jack White for an example. He can take a Stella or a wire with a strat pickup and play blues or rock. Watch the video It Might Get Loud and you will understand!

I think it would be nice to own both types of guitars, this way you got all bases covered.
I have both, and enjoy both, the strat is more versatile, getting many different types of tones from it,
the les paul has a warmer tone, so your going to need different eq settings for each guitar.

you can make any guitar sound great if you have a good amp and know how to dial it in.
so many people spend all their time playing, and nothing on developing tone.

+1 on the "good amp". "dialing it in" is usually easy on a good amp. Take any Fender RI or a Hot Rod model. Put the tone controls at 50%, Volume on 3 (to push the tubes a bit), Reverb on 1 then play.

Also is there an specific distortion / other pedal I should get that's good for Strat to play some Rock music?

For Strat-to-hard-rock I use an Amptweaker Tight Rock. You could also look at the Wampler Pinacle, Plextortion, and SLOstortion; and the MI Audio crunch box.

Much cheaper pedal: Boss SD-1

Pretty sure Tom Morello would disagree with the initial statement.

Soul Power, indeed.

There's no actual rule for this, but I'd say use what you like. There are a few HM bands in the 60s and 70s that used Strats.

A Strat can be used for anything.

no offense to you my friend it's natural that you say that when people talk... but it offends me when people say a strat can't shred or do metal!!!!! strats are amazing guitars!!! yeah they are made for blues but any guitar could play anything!!! yet people attack strats saying they can't do metal why don't they say that about any other guitar...

my ex bass player who thought the same thing was so full of it... he would say my strat had that strat quack sound when i was in the bridge position loool and he would say that a tele was better cause of the twang (which i agree but the bridge pup on my vm has a lot more twang than most strats)

watch these two videos of me acomplishing to do what many people say is impossible ;)

Since the late '60s, a Fender Strat has handled all Rock Music exceptionally well for me, I assure you.

You can play EVERYTHING with a Strat! (given that you have it properly equipped for the style of music.
It's been proven many times by famous guitar players.
