Hey All, I'm the proud new owner of an American Standard and am having trouble getting the plastic film off the pickguard, especially under the knobs, and don't want to mess it up. Any helpful hints will be gratefully appreciated.

You should be able to carefully remove those knobs with a straight pull. If you are uncomfortable with anything of the sort, take it back to your vendor and have the tech do it for you.

Also, and forgive my ignorance, it's my first Strat, the tone control seems to affect the bridge pickup. Is this new? I though Strats only had tone controls for the neck and middle pickups?

This guitar has been wired with the 'Delta-tone' circuit and a high output bridge pickup.
The second tone control is for BOTH the middle and bridge pickups. When you go to "10" on this pot it rolls off the tone circuit completely and lets the highs through. You should find a 'detente' (a stop) around '5'. From there on the circuit's influence decreases until it is cut out completely at '10'.

Somewhere in all of the release hype was some yadayada about the working details of this circuitry but I can't seem to zone in on it online. It's been around awhile. I had it in a '97 American Standard though I can't comment on any refinements in the new guitar. Again, its one of these things that the company seems to make you work hard to obtain.

Keep an eye out for the guitar magazines. You should find reviews of this guitar somewhere. They're usual good for putting these new products through their paces.

Also try consumerrelations@fender.com and ask them for a detailed explanation of the nuances of this circuitry.

One more thought, Skip.

Fender does its thing with all that 'pizzazz' you see on the Frontline Home page. That's what generates the business. The heart and soul of it, as well as what you need to know, is the close to 150K 'brothers and sisters' out there in this Forum. Smart move on the company's part. Takes a great deal off their shoulders in terms of questions and answers, and keeps the product moving.

Enjoy your new guitar, and remember, if you scroll down the forums you'll either find the answer to a question you might have had, or someone who can answer it.

ZZ,

Thanks for the information. I did know about the "Delta Tone" circuit, but not that it also controlled that bridge pickup. My last Fender was a Jazzmaster I owned from about '65 to '67. I just switched over from Gibby and Ibanez w/humbuckers. Guess there's a lot more to Fender than wood and microphones.

Thanks again....

For future reference, the products section of Frontline Online provides a rather complete catalog of the Fender line. Each guitar has a specs section you can bring up which is rather detailed in content. However, the more technical aspects of the ins and outs of a particular circuit, for example, are not provided. You have to keep your eyes and ears open for it else where.

What I have been able to learn 'elsewhere' on the web is a tad modified from what I told you previously. The Delta tone pot is turned off on '10' and the pickups feed directly to the output jack....hence...'no load' between the pickups and the output line. It is said to provide great clarity and bass response. This being a distillation of two sources outside the company online.

Hope this is of further help.

Concerning the OP. This is one thing that is a bit too much. If you want to remove ALL the cellophane (or whatever it is) from the pick guard you'll need to remove every last screw... have fun!

It would be easy for Fender to remove the plastic film covering the pickguard that ships from their supplier before assembly. Then just cover the pickguard with a custom "bag patch" sized to fit the pickguard assy after it is installed in the guitar, but before the strings are attached.

I dunno... what better way to really get to know your new strat though then stripping the pickguard? Seriously!

That's a good point, man. A guy should take things apart to make note of the dates and codes found underneath (and in the neck pocket too). Then you really know when it was made.

I'm quite a bit reserved about the idea of a 'newbie' taking apart a Stratocaster. Been there, done that, 50 years ago. "Ouch!"

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for the tips, very helpful. Got the film off the pickguard, and played with the 'No-load' tones. I guess I'm good. This guitar has one of the slickest and fastest actions I've ever seen.

Also, the links provided are greatly appreciated.
