One of the things touted about this new Am Std it the fit of neck in the neck pocket. If you are not skilled at this sort of thing have a competent luthier do the swap.

From a personal point of view, this is why there is a Custom Shop. The new Am Std was built as a concept and the so-called 'modern C-shaped neck' goes on almost everything they build. That's an economies of scale approach.
Personally, if you can save your pennies, keep the Am Std stock as you've purchased it and have the Custom Shop build you a Clapton. You'll have the best of both worlds both in versatility and retained value.

The guitar they built for me is better than anything off the production line I could have found on the wall.

What is the real difference b/t a custom shop EC strat and a production model EC strat? All the components posted are the same.

I've been trying to get at this one myself for some time now.

With respect to the CS guitar, someone said that the body blank starts out as two rather than three glued pieces. A guitar salesperson told me that the CS neck has a slightly more tapered V. The neck wood may be a figured maple with a lighter finish, and the color options seem to be two types of blue, and black. The guitar is signed on the back of the head stock, not the front.

Overall, a CS built guitar will get a bit more TLC in the assembly and finish than a production line instrument.

Yeah, but a $1000 worth of TLC? Maybe if $$ was no object, but I can't see myself spending the extra $$ unless I was going out and doing this professionally....thank god I have a day job.

That's why the guitar manufacturers have gone to less costly materials and labor markets to stay competitive. There's something for every budget out there. In fact, there is one maker whose overseas product is so well crafted that it makes one think twice about purchasing the US-built instrument.

Just a postscript to you question and my previous reply.

If you buy a neck from Warmoth, which has a great selection, you'll likely pay around $200 for it. The specs are close to the Fender neck but not exact.

Thus, if you want the neck 'dimed' you'll have to take the data off the Fender web catalog and order it as such from Warmoth in all respects including, neck wood, fingerboard wood, nut width, radius, and frets. Nor will you have a Fender logo on the neck. Warmoth is licensed by Fender to produce replacement necks but no logo is permitted. You'll find the licensing agreement on the Warmoth website for your information.

My original suggestion remains: "Own both guitars."
