has anyone used one of them?

i saw the ad in one of my old guitar player magazines, and i wonder what exactly it did. it is supposed to add 6 db's of boost, but since it runs over a hundred bucks, i would like to know if it is worth it

From the people themselves:

SJMB and PRTB are a bit differerent. You can hear the difference if you listen to the soundclips on the website. Put in words, SJMB is a bit more transparent than PRTB at max boost setting, PRTB sounds a bit 'dirty' in the max boost position, while the other two boost positions are more transparent. Also, SJMB boosts low frequencies a bit less - it's a guitar booster, whereas PRTB is a universal booster (both guitars and basses).

Another difference which is useful to know is that these boosters handle volume changes on a guitar differently. PRTB is designed to work only on max volume (which is what most guitarist do), whereas SJMB will work at any volume pot setting.

PRTB is useful if you want to get a particular sound. I have had extatic comments from people who managed to make the pickup sound 'just a bit' thinner with the first boost position. Whereas if you just want to give your guitar a push for solos and jazz like cordwork SJMB will be fine.

And finally, SJMB takes 3 minutes to install. PRTB will require a bit more effort and a hole in your guitar (which you can get by getting rid of one of the tone pots).

Technically it´s an output transformer and some caps and resistors. I never tried one.
It´s expensive but maybe worth the money (because it is passive and small).

Cheers,
Robin

The main advantage of the Villex booster: no batteries required. :P

Necro bump.
I just put one in my MIM and I have to say I like the difference.

It seems to shift the resonant peaks more towards the mids.
I know some have said the loudness is only perceived because of the boost in mids.
Well, if I put my OD on, not playing just listening to the hum and then flip the Villex on, the noise increases greatly.

I figure it is an inductor and cap, thus the need for high input impedance next in line down the chain.
On an oscilloscope, the change was perhaps 100mV...200mV.

Worth the money? Probably not. But I didn't want to remove a tone control for a real varitone, nor add an active mid boost ala Clapton.

... and that's where I start thinking it's snake oil.

Someone please explain to me how this device produces voltage gain without a power supply?

Perhaps it creates energy! Perhaps if I connected its input to its output I could create a perpetual motion machine!

Ssssssnake oil. It's just a fancy tone circuit.
