As a nod to the amp I was thinking of adding a jewel light to my strat. Ideas? comments?

I was thinking of making it push button to turn it on and off. I could even possibly make it blink at different rates by turning it. I'm just trying to get ideas together before even attempting to do any kind of surgery to my strat. I might put one on the tele instead.

I think it would be kinda cool for an hour or so, then I sould regret it. But that's just me.

It's an idea that a buddy of mine and I were thinking about to have something different on a guitar. Mind you we were throwing down a few at the time so our judgement may have been a bit impaired. I think you are right jooiie that it'd be cool for awhile but then maybe regret it but this kind of advice is why I posted this.

I could give it a purpose such as making it a lit kill switch like on the buckethead guitar.

Hi Arc-n-spark: some people only want two control knobs on a Strat. Either they don't like the volume so close to the strings and move it down to the first tone knob position, or they simply want a master tone. In either of those cases there can be an issue with what to do with the empty hole left by the missing pot, and I've sometimes seen guys put a jewel light in there, just to fill it. I seem to remember Forum user Jah Soldier did that, though I think on his guitar the jewel light was a dummy, I don't think it lights up.

Making it light gives you the extra issue of finding somewhere to lodge the battery needed to run the circuit. And you'd have to decide whether to have a switch to activate it, or hook it into the the pickup circuit so that it came on when you plugged a jack into the socket - just like any other "active" element in a guitar's harness. That would be fun but fiddly and you might get tired of taking the pickguard off everytime you needed to change the battery, if you housed it in the control cavity.

Still, if you go that far then I definitely think you should install an extra bit of gizmology to make the light pulse in time to your playing, in response to the signal running through the circuit. I've heard of guys doing that, and of course for the likes of Steve Vai that counts as entry-level lighting FX. I can point you towards the UK based builder who does the customisation on Steve's guitars if that would be useful...? :D

Cheers - C

I bought a used Explorer that had been modified. Among other things, the modder had changed it to just have 2 knobs (master volume and master tone) and moved the selector switch to where the other knob had been, leaving a big hole in the pickguard. I found I liked that arrangement, so instead of putting it back to stock I looked for something to plug the hole in the pickguard. I have some extra jewel lights in different colors and noticed they were just about the right size, so now that Explorer has a jewel light where the switch normally is.

There's tons of extra room in the cavity under the guard so I could easily fit batteries and some sort of circuit to light it up, and maybe someday I'll get bored enough to do something like that. But for now it's just there to plug a hole in a slightly amusing way.

However, the hole was already there and there was already a big cavity in the body. I could put it back to stock and no one would ever know. If you put a jewel light in the upper horn as shown in your pic you'll have to drill a cavity in the body. (And the pickguard of course, but Strat pickguards are inexpensive to replace if you ever want to put it back to stock.)

Personally, I wouldn't drill a half inch (or bigger) hole in a guitar just for a cosmetic mod.
