Hi Guys,

I have recently bought a strat with noiseless pups, with the Eric Clapton wiring. I really love them..they are so versatile! Do they act in a similiar way to humbuckers being noiseless?...as im getting anything from metal (EVH) to blues (SRV) no problem.

Im looking at getting another Fender and was looking at a HSS or HH but im kinda thinking of goin single coil now for Gilmourish tones as my noiseless handles the hard stuff great.

Im kinda answering my own question here...but would like your thoughts.

I have noiseless pickups, they sound great and are super quiet. I also have an HH strat and the noiseless pickups are quieter then the humbuckers. As for actual tone, noiseless single coils don't seem to have the warm and punchy sound that the humbuckers have.

I love the noiseless pickups for that bright Fender sound, but the humbuckers are a must for most hard rock. Noiseless are quiet like humbuckers but have a completely different sound.

If you want a versatile guitar definitely get the HSS, I would. If you want metal I would get a Seymour Duncan Dimebucker installed at the bridge.

Have you purchased the EC signature series guitar? If so, that 25db midboost should give you plenty of crank.

The "Fender Noiseless" pups ARE single coils as are the newer SCN's (Samarian Cobalt Noiseless) found in the American Deluxe and the '57 Vintage Hotrod, among others. I'm not clear as to what you are looking for. Is it the look of SC's with the voice of a HB?

If it's Gilmore, look into the EMG DG-20. When swapping that into a Strat you can fit the 9 volt battery into the back of the guitar just by removing the center spring off the trem block and then rebalancing the block. This way you avoid having to remove the pickguard for a battery replacement. The Gilmore electronics are a strictly lead guitar voice with both a 12db boost and tone expander circuitry. That will be a dedicated instrument.

Having owned the DG-20 and now both the EC Strat and a Les Paul with ''Burstbuckers" I can tell you that these guitars have very different voices.

For HB, I would go with the traditional HB design in that respect. If it's a Strat body you prefer, then take an HH design and swap in what ever fits your need.

They do not act as humbuckers but they do cancel noise

Gilmour loved the '57 and '62 Vintage Reissue pickups and bought five red reissue Strats in '84. At first they were "off the shelf" but was seen with EMGs in the Bryan Ferry Live Aid concert in July 1985. He has a black Strat that he prefers because the EMG pups sounded “too much like humbuckers and not so much as a Strat”.

I have the SCN pups and S-1 in my DLX and I love it. In noise cancelling patterns it is deep but no where near the growl of true dual coil humbuckers.

Hello Fenderibo,

First let me say that the Strat is my #1 axe,
it's equipped with the vintage noiseless,
good Fender sound and totally quiet.

Maybe they are humbucking but they can't
do what my SG's humbuckers do.

Cheers.

What do you think a humbucker was designed for?

"The "Fender Noiseless" pups ARE single coils ..."
Nope.....wrong again, they're stacked coils, like a humbucker only one on top of the other, not side by side. Maybe you're confusing them with Lace pickups.

When checking out Fender's Noiseless pup's, Vintage or Hot Noiseless try going to a local shop that has guitars with both sets. Many have complained about the "tinniness" of the Vintage Noiseless and that they're difficult to adjust to get the right tone, some don't like the Hot Noiseless because they aren't bright enough.

It all depends on what sound you're looking for.

I played them all, looking. They're all humbuckers. I asked and Fender told me about the SCNs when I was looking at them, and it's also the vintage and hot noiseless. They're dual coils of different designs, not single coils. What's a classic style 1950s humbucker? A dual coil also. However, Fender's using a lot of technology to get a single-coil-like sound out of the noiseless pickups. They do sound very Stratty, all of them. Clapton in particular gets an outrageous tone out of his Vintage Noiseless that's like singing glass, using the mid-boost and I think a huge amount of gain because they're noiseless and can take it. He's got all the equipment he needs, and otherwise the Vintage Noiseless are low output. The Beck Hot Noiseless have a mellow tone. They sound good and like a Strat, but not exactly. The SCNs also sound like a Strat but directly compared to Custom Shop Texas Special Alnico V pickups even the SCNs are flat or bland sounding - lacking complexity. However, the SCNs have a kind of smooth tone all their own, and if you really crank the gain to the limit, then the neck SCN in particular starts to sort of get a crazy voice that I find appealing.

Imho, for hum cancelling with a genuine Alnico classic vintage Strat tone the only way to go is Texas Specials, Fat50s or another Custom Shop single coil with the reverse wound middle. In positions 2 and 4, the hum is cancelled and with mild to moderate gain all positions have little or no noise. That's just one flavor, though - my favorite and that's why I like it. Fender offers dozens of Strat flavors, which is cool except I don't have that much money and I want several of them. Really, the SCNs are another flavor. The other Custom Shop single coils are another flavor. The Vintage Noiseless are another flavor (and get ready to amp the heck out of them because of the low output and change the pots). Even the oem Highway Ones are distinctive and have their moments and amp settings, which I got to know well playing them for almost a year. So many guitars, so little time (and money).

And just as many, probably more, have said they sound great.
