Any suggestions for a good first amp? Something that (hopefully) will last a good long time? I don't need anything outrageously loud (yet) as I'm just beginning to learn. There are 2 things that I know I definitely want: a cd/mp3 input jack, and a headphone jack for late night jamming.

Thanks for all of your help!
Ziggy...

I have a Roland Cube 20X for practice.

It has :
AUX/in for CD,
Rec/Headphone out.
Power Squeezer (drops output form 20-watts to 2-watts)
Built in guitar tuner, clean/lead channels and some built in COSM based effects.

Not bad price similar to the g-dec.

http://www.roland.com/PRODUCTS/EN/CUBE-20X/index.html

When I chose it, it was between the 20x and the g-dec, I liked the sound form the Roland better. But it is still a solid state amp and sounds it.

VOX has some pretty good practice amps too.

Hey,

also good practice amps also available from Ibanez, Marshall, Hughes & Kettner, Peavy...on transistor basis, most with 2 channels (clean, crunch),
head phone input, cd-player insert. Or Line 6 (modelling) with several amp simulations...

Stay tuned :D

The Line 6 Spider 15 or 30 watt is very good. My son has one and I even used it to record.

Try a Line6 Spider 3 30 - it's got 30 watts and effects built in and everything else you want but plays well at all volumes. Better still go to a dealer and ask to try them out, it depends on how much you want to spend and what you want to do with it. Most people have their preferred amps that's why it's best to try them out. Those that are 10-15 watt are ok but really are practise amps. PS I didn't see the other guy's post recommending Line 6 before I submiited this so that's a fair reccomendation. I've got a Line 6 Spider 2 30 watt and wouldn't be without it.

If you like to shred, the new VOX AD30XL Valvetronic is really cool and cheap too! ($299)

Thinking now (ya happens sometimes :) )
should have asked what kind of practicing you mean.
ie: personal practice in your favorite hiding spot, or maybe jam a bit with others.

Personally when practicing and learning on my own, I want a very clean sound and usually fairly quiet. I want to hear exactly what I am hitting and where it is fouling up. So a fairly low wattage amp (2-5 watts), or even powered headphones would work.

The Roland I mentioned above is a modeling amp but after the initial playing around, it has been set to model a clean acoustic, with no overdrive or distortion and pretty well stays that way.

So just about any of the amps mentioned in this thread with a good clean sound channel would work for this kind of practicing.

If you are talking about practicing with others, then a bit more power may be in order depends what they are using.

One of my own requirements for a practice amp was its size, I needed a very small footprint so it would fit under a desk or behind the shredder and disappear.
And the OL insisted on one that had a "night button", on the Roland this was the "power squeezer" that drops its output from 20w - 2w

Gather your personal requirements for the amp then go off to your favorite music store and try out what they have available.

Sorry for the rambling, it's Friday :)
and I don't feel like working when I know there is a lonely guitar waiting for me :)

The Crate GTD15R is pretty good. Its got a nice reverb, and its big for the price. I got one on sale at Guitar Center for 80 bucks (they normally run from 110-120)
