That was the question? I would suggest contacting Fender at consumerrelations@fender.com

I would assume Fender picks what stock strings to use by what the most popular gauge is and thin strings are the most common and appeal to the widest audience so Fender puts them on their guitars.

Questions often prompt a reply from the webmaster. Perhaps this one will.

Even though Brad knows quite a bit about Fender products, what strings go on what guitar is not his department. If you are trying to find a serious answer to your serious question then the direction I pointed you in would be the correct one.

Hmmm...Maybe it's because smaller strings are cheaper to make than bigger strings. You know they'll cut cost wherever they can. And they know people are going to put their gauge preference on anyway.

Yep, I think it has to do with money. Hell, everything always does.

I remember my MIM 2000 model strat came with 10's.

I've put the question to them via email at the URL you supplied. If I receive an answer I will pass it on to the Forum.

Thanks for you input.

Doc.

hey fender510 did you do the refret yourself or did you have it done by a luthier? if you had it done by a luthier, how much did it cost?

The total cost was $325.00 but, I had other things done as well beside the fret job. I had locking tuners and a new pickguard installed. So you could say the majority of the cost went to the fret job.

What was the actual question you wanted an answer too?

Simply put: What design determinants does the factory use when choosing the stock string gauge for a guitar?

Only Fender will know that!
