Very interesting. Today I sold my 1990 Fender Plus Deluxe Stratocaster to
a local man who'd been collecting amps & guitars since the 1970s.
He decided to buy reasonably priced guitars. I told him 1980s & 1990s
would hold their values it today's prices. IMHO, older guitars are over priced

Not to temporarily hijack this thread here..My apologies but..... Toppscore.......
How in the world do you confirm your conjecture on future guitar values... :?:
While at the same time..." Older Guitars are Overpriced "... you completely dismiss
current supply and demand, which is what drives older guitars values higher than equivalent current models....Amongst other variables....As far as 80's to 90's guitars holding their value, we are talking about a segment of time when CBS owned Fender. Some of those guitars were at best of inconsistent quality since cost cutting was the determining factor.
It's unlikely that this production time can be assessed for quite some time unless you have a Palantir stone.

OK. 53 Mag. First of all, in your eagerness, you missed "IMHO", right?
But, not to dismiss "IMHO" as a "catch-all phrase", read and learn. OK?

For me, I am chatting about older guitars/vintage guitars being over priced. Settled on that?

You mentioned supply & demand. Right?
"While at the same time..." Older Guitars are Overpriced "... you completely dismiss current supply and demand, which is what drives older guitars values higher than equivalent current models....Amongst other variables...."

So,please do catch me if I am off base. Thanks. How is your Economics 101?
Or just basic knowledge of marketing? Supply/Demand? Great? Good?

Anyway, EBay is a great example.
Let's just discuss Fender Stratocasters and Fender Telecasters and Fender Amplifiers
manufactured between 1947 and 1979. All Fender products listed on EBay between
those thirty-three years. To me, pre 1980 is vintage. Problem with that? PLMK. Thanks.

OK, 53 Mag. Here it is. Clean and simple.
Search EBay for the word Fender. 300,000 items show up. Maybe half are Fender
musical products. Big number, anyway. Maybe 1000(+) vintage Fender amps & guitars.
Maybe more???

So, there is no demand for those 1000(+) vintage guitars and amps at the advertised prices.
Right? They are just sitting there being listed and accumulating EBay fees.

So, would you say that the vintage amps are:
1) under-priced?
2) priced just right?
3) over-priced?

Would it be safe to state, not discounting your vast knowledge that drove you to declare
(in public, mind you), "you completely dismiss current supply and demand, which is what drives older guitars values higher than equivalent current models....Amongst other variables"

These are your words, RIGHT?

So, let's just pretend that the listed 1000(+) vintage Fender guitars and amps are,
should we dare say, OVERPRICED ~ Yikes!!!
IS OVERPRICED A GOOD WORD FOR ITEMS/PRODUCTS NOT SELLING :?: :?: :?:

Please Please Please ~ YOU TELL ME???

If they were "PRICED JUST RIGHT", none would be for sale, as all would be sold. RIGHT :?:

If they were "UNDER-PRICED", sellers would not have time to list. RIGHT :?:

At least you are pleasant with your thoughts, ideas and opinons.

Shall we say, based upon my above description, that the vintage amps & guitars
listed on EBay are over priced and there is not demand until a price is met or lowered?
What say you, 53 Mag?

I say... I was not going to get into a wide ranging debate on someone else's thread.

That said, E-Bay is really a poor indicator of intrinsic value. It's interesting as far as info but it usually is completely offscale as far as values. The reason being E-Bay does not assess intrinsic value, it only reflects emotionally based values and speculatively based values on what the market will bear...( no puns ). I understand that many source it as an indicator of where to price but it's like following the herd, the info is still based on intangible perceptions...

Would you organize your investment portfolio based on stocks sold on E-Bay....?
I would hope that instead you found a credible source or method of assessing values due to realistic expectations based from sound investment principles, not the word on the street.

As far as Vintage.....I do not consider anything past 1970 as vintage and 65 to 70 is still questionable. early 50's to 60's and before...then that is a different story. However once again the smaller the number of existing models and the condition, meaning playable is where I assess wether it is (for me worth the ask price) It has to be a playable instrument.

Personally I believe people who ( today ) invest in so called vintage guitars as investments either have (1) large amounts of disposable income (2) missed the boat as far as a return on so called investment and foolishly hope for a rebound (3) would have much better returns for their investment if they invested in an index fund for 25+ years. (4) Musical instruments do not make sound investment vehicles due to their inherently volatile values...

just a few lines too many, however if you wish to debate this.... fine, start a thread and I'll be more than willing to debate and clarify my standpoints, however I still stand by what I said. you cannot give advice that is taken as fact when you know it is guess work on your end...

Again my apologies to the OP and I'm done here discussing this topic..
Now back to small hands and hopefully music to look forward to when I'm in my rocking chair.....
