Hi guys,

i have an American deluxe stratocaster 2007, and would like to change the noiseless pickups by 3 texas specials pickups. It's possible? Are Texas pickups compatible with the S1 switch? How will the sound be?

a lot of thanks

You should be able to wire them up to the S-1 system.

Oh sure, I had it done, and then had it undone in 2 weeks. And no, the guitar tech could not get the S-1 switch to work with the Texas Specials, so you'll need a new 5-way switch - you've just cut your versatility in half.

You're basically taking an $1100 guitar, spending another $300 on it, and turning it in to a $700 guitar. Get a Standard, Highway 1, or an American and convert that.

(Also, the SCN pickups are sealed, so you can't get new covers for them)

Well I looked at the SCN diagram, it's not all that complex. The requirements for the switching system are simple: you need a separate shield ground from the coil ground, and of course the coil hot switch. Any pickup that has a separate shield ground will work. It is not magic.

Of course, the pots are another story - I have no idea what the pot values are for the SCNs, they may well be higher value than you'd want with regular pickups.

But you'd only want to go to that expense for the abalone dots, slightly better bridge & nice woods of the Deluxe as that's all you got left of it.

You can do it but it won't work exactly the same. Use the S-1 switch to make it where you can use all three at once in series, in addition to regular strat 5-way settings. Forget about the other settings from the s-1. the texas specials are reverse wound on the middle pu, so you will get some noise canceling from pos 2, 4, and from the s-1 position that uses all three in series.

+1

Just disregard the green wires on the noiseless pups and their connection points, as the TS won't have them, use the same black wire connection points used for the original pups, with the new pups (only the middle pup black connects to back of pot, the other two pups black wires connect to S-1). The extra green wire on the noiseless pup is an extra ground for shield, while regular pups don't use a shield so forget about the green wires completely and it should work fine.

Just change one pup at a time, unsolder positive wire from the original pup (White, yellow, and red) from its place, and solder the positive wire of the new pup (white, yellow and white) to the same place. Then do the same for the negative wire (black). Keep the pup wire connected to the pup, unsolder the other end of the wire where it connects to the circuit. Disconnect the green wires on the original pups from the back of the pot and nothing reconnects there. You can just cut the wires at the back of the pot, no need to remove the solder on the pot, it can be used for other connections later if needed.

If someone tried using the connection points for the green shield wires (back of pot) with the new pups, I could see why they couldn't get the new pups to work with the S-1, as the black wires connect to the switching on an S-1, while a regular 5-way switch setup has the black wires on the back of the pot. When an S-1 system is connected like this, the normal 5-way positions would work, but the S-1 wouldn't work. Obviously the TS or other regular pups are not noiseless, but you will get the normal noise canceling in pup selector switch pos 2 and 4.

Hey there as the above two posters have mentioned it is certainly possible to wire std custom shop pickups with the S1. I've done it with many pickups and finally went for texas in the neck, 69 in mid and fat 50s in the bridge. (This could change though depending on how I'm feeling!)
One of the sweetest strat tones is available with the switch in mid and the S1 down.... all 3 pickups on gives a great sound.
Watch out for middle pickups that are reverse wound like the texas since these will give you unusual phase effects in some S1 positions. You are better off using all pickups with the same polarity and winding.
One thing I did note is the SCNs have a reverse polarity to most custom shop pus so don't try using custom/scn type combo.
In my experience you can get the covers off the scns if you are careful a very small screwdriver can be used to slowly wedge them off but why would you want to since they probably will only fit the scn type and not a standard pickup.
Hope this helps :D
