On the whole sanding is a finishing tool in timber not a grinding away material tool - accepted they do sand out the body contours.

You could do it but you will need to produce a template to regularly check everything is where you think it should be and then use long pieces of sand paper, about 200mm, stuck to a flat piece of timber to ensure you don't sand in dips and troughs.

You could perhaps use a spoke shave and/or produce a curved cabinet scraper form an old saw blade to remove the timber initially but you would need to be very careful not to run out of true.

On a MiM neck I think I would give it a go (but I am an indentured carpenter and joiner) . It will go one of two ways and, if you lash it up you'll just need to buy another neck. It's not the sort of risk with a set neck guitar. While I might give it a go myself only you know your own level of skill and competence....perhaps the fact that you are asking might suggest you shouldn't.

The other problem is you are chasing a profile that you think you have felt, unless you can template the neck you favoured. You need to remove your neck to do the work on it properly so wont be able to experience the new profile, to see if it is what you wanted, until you put the guitar back together....when it could be too late.

This is a big issue.
What we feel and what we think we feel are often two very different thing. It's like feeling pressure, or having a sore spot on your foot, and taking an intuitive step with an insole or padding results in making the problem worse.
The small bones and contours in our hands can be extremely deceptive when it comes to judging what we think we feel in a neck contour.

Guys?

Miami Mike resurrected a 10 year old thread.

The original poster, scpa105, hasn't visited the Forum since 2011. (At least hasn't logged in since then -- maybe he lurks occasionally.)

He never gave an update on whether he went through with his urge to thin his neck.

Mike has been doing "TBT" posts off and on for the last few weeks.
