I was impressed at how similar the two guitars sounded.

Tone Test with Paul Reed Smith PRS 305 & Gilmour Black Strat

Listen to the video without looking for three or four minutes and see if you can guess which guitar is being played.

Both guitars sound great. I could tell the difference though. At first I thought the first guitar was the Strat, then a brighter sound came in and saw he was playing the Strat then.

As I mentioned, both sound great. I would probably buy the PRS guitar between the 2 because it sounded more full. And I am definitely a Strat-man by choice. Luckily I get that warm tone with 2 of my present guitars in my collection, My modded Blacktop and my modded Highway 1.

The Fender has a finer sound, more definition, dynamics and character.

Cheers,
Robin

Yes, I have to say I always use very good headphones instead of speakers. I bet the difference is even bigger in the room he´s playing.
The Fender is the better guitar (but the PRS def. sounds fatter, bigger and more compact).
Not because it´s a Fender but to my ears that Fender beats that PRS in many aspects.

Cheers,
Robin

Robinstrat, I'm still not able to tell one from the other. At 51 my ears ain't what they used to be. Most folks, myself included, began to loose hearing at the high and low extremes as we get older. So maybe these two guitars are much closer in the midrange.

I noticed that the guy flubbed a lick a few seconds before the 4 minute mark and looks at the camera and laughs. He was playing the strat at the time. Overall I really like his style.

Tally-ho,

Hey guys, I own a herd of Fenders and PRS. All great guitars just a bit different vibe. I am stuck on my latest aquisition though...A Fender Custom Shop Wildwood 10 1959 Strat with brazilian board. Out Of This World great strat! Words cannot discribe it's yummyness. :D

I thought the PRS sounded great. I thought the Stratocaster was good, but those pickups on the PRS were better. It reminds me of the differences of my '71 Strat vs the Lace Sensor equipped Strat Ultra. It is likely the PRS pickups are hotter, having a more dense sound than the lower output pickups on the Stratocaster. Those pickups are ugly on the PRS, looking like those Fender Elite Stratocaster pickups from the early '80s.

Is there any detail about those single coils on the PRS, that we should know?

Kinda depends on what you
do . I play lead in a big band
and you gotta have a strat to cut
through the prs will get lost
but sounds good by itself
or with maybe just an acoustic on
rythym

Youtube is a terrible way to determine sound quality.

Youtube is typically 64kbit/sec mono mp3, with a sample rate around 22050 kHz. For comparison, acceptable mp3 audio will be 128kBit/sec, stereo with a sample rate of 44100kHz.

I think you meant 22050Hz and 44100Hz.
