Hey y'all. I'll bet someone has an answer for me. Been noticing some roughness on my commonly used frets- 1st and 2nd strings when vibrato-ing. Frets are like 5,7,8,9,10,12- where I play the most so I wonder if it's wear. So, for example fretting 8th fret,2nd string "g" and doing a vibrato toward the 6th string you can really feel like sandpaper between the string and the fret which will get progressively worse until you stop the note. Next time it's not there, and then it is again. Had another maple neck before this one that did the same thing. My rosewood neck never has at all. Looking at the frets they seem fine. No pock marking or scratches beyond how you can see that the guitar has been played. The 8th fret though over on the headstock side you can feel something like a nick or maybe the finish. Haven't scratched at it for fear of making it worse. Guitar new late last summer. Maple neck american standard. Could it be the hi gloss finish wearing off, and if so, what would the solution be? Thought about steel wooling but wanted to ask first. Thanks everyone!

It's not anything to do with the finish of the fingerboard. Your strings don't actually touch it and if your fingers do, you're fretting way too hard and bending the notes.

Sounds like your frets have either had impact damage or just need a grind and polish.

yes, but that us Usually knocked off on final fit an finish. and if not it wears off fairly quickly. if your not sure though, press down and do the side to side "foxy lady" type vibrato and see if little finish dust flakes off. if so you can just play it off. or if you cant stand the natural way of things just scrape lightly with a fresh razor, but you will need another polish after.....

Most often it´s the strings worn out, change them and check again.

Cheers,
Robin
