Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a Strat! I'm also in the market for some ESPs (namely Horizon or SV), but I'll keep that for another forum.

What I essentially would like is Yngwie's old tone. So, nicely dry, with low gain. Enough gain to have a nice lead sound but still a... cleanly sounding low end. Here's a video, the song starts at about 2 minutes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07gZRzjqRtE

I have a Marshall JVM410C, and it's pretty versatile. I can get a nice old distortion as well as a modern one, I can even get to that Plexi level.

I know I need a Strat with SSS combination for that sound, and I honestly don't think I need an OD with this crazy amp. Now, I was thinking about noiseless pups, but how do normals do with a noise gate? Does it suck tone? If it doesn't ruin the tone, I'm obviously open to more guitars.

What I see is, Yngwie's sig strat is for his never tone which is tons of gain, reverb etc... Of course I'd love his relic strat found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2QhhXlqhpic for which I think it's not even scalloped (or very little scallop), but I guess that'd be custom shop'd.

As you can see, I'm aiming for a vintage looking strat (large headstock...). http://images.fender.com/community/guit ... dfbfa1.jpg this might help, and I'm also open to other colors like olympic white.

Cheers!

EDIT: I'm sorry if I didn't make it clear, I'm wondering if there's a production line strat made like this. :)

Alternatively, I could just not-get noiseless pups and get a noise gate, IF they don't suck tone. I don't have any pedals so I don't know much about how they work.

Why not just buying the Fender Malmsteen Signature Stratocaster ?
Your amp is fine, you need nothing else - no pedal, no noise gate.

I'm aware of that, but I was looking for his older tone which utilized less gain and reverb (compared to now). But still, I'm very much considering his sig (I can always roll the gain off), although I don't know if I'm paying too much for his name. :/

Besides the fact that I'm not as good as Yngwie, his Strat in the first video, where the song starts at about 2 minutes, sounds very close to my 1986/87 American Standard (stock! no pimping in any way!).
No kidding!!
I went like  when the song started.

Anyhow, what you need is your Marshall (that's just fine for this sound!) and an American Standard Strat with alder(!!) body and rosewood(!!) fretboard. You should get pretty close to that kind of sound if you know how to set the amp controls.

Honestly, you don't need a friggin' expensive signature guitar to get close to such a sound.

If the basics are there (body wood, neck wood, fretboard wood and good pickups), then you're ready to go.

Of course every guitar sounds a little different, every guitar has its own soul, even models from the same line with the same features. Still ..... I'm convinced that you'll find a strat if you test some.

I'm not kidding, I was totally surprised when I heard that sound. It sounds like my oly white "Moby".
I'm not familiar with Yngwie's older songs, I only know the modern million-notes-in-a-second triller-classic-shredding (not thriller-classic-shredding, ha ha ha).
I like some of his songs but I'm not a fan. I guess I'll go and check some older stuff out

Ha ha!! I just played the video and told my wife (we got married YESTERDAY!!!!!) to listen without looking.
I asked: "Which of my guitars sounds like this one in the video?"

I've got several different Strats and Ibanez RG and JEM.

She listened carefully, then she said: "Sounds like your "Moby"!"

Congrats on getting married!

I'll take what you said into consideration, because his ex and current tone is like day and night. His early work is fantastic imo, listen to stuff like Black Star, Far Beyond the Sun, anything with Alcatrazz (Evil Eye rocks).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-vYXyr8 ... ure=g-vrec and this, IMO, is fantastic. (I dig his tone here)

Congratulations Smokin´ all the best to both of you.

@ConEGIB
Yngwie used The Duck for Rising Force (scalloped and DiMarzio equipped already), he doesn´t change the radius on his guitars but changed the frets to Dunlop 6000.
Buy a Classic 70 and install some DiMarzios. The only thing is the ash body.
The American Special has an alder body(wrong routing), wrong neck profile and the wrong radius.

Cheers,
Robin

Any standard 60's model based Strat will do, there is nothing magic about Yglie Wiggly's Strats, other than a change in pups ( at times )

( Sorry i couldn't resist, my mom who is in her 70's has never been able to pronounce Yngwie's name so she calls him the above, a little old French lady..It's just funny )

Anyhow I would be more concerned with actually studying Baroque Era Music, which is a prime force in Malmsteen's repertoire. That will carry you a long way into understanding where he is at.

As for the naysayers who despise Malmsteen for whatever reasons, do the OP a favor and stay off this thread unless you have something constructive to add to this discussion..

As for your Amp...100 watts tube amp... on a stage in a large Hall, full audience OK, but where can you practice with that beast on full without having someone banging your door down... :?:
I'm pretty sure a lot of Malmsteen's sound is in the fact that he drives his amps to max, he uses pedals/effects but the amp is primary.
There is a lot of info out there on Yngwie's sound and how he gets it....There's also a lot of myth but some research should aid you in reaching you goal....

I would add that aspiring to play all of Malmsteens's repertoire is ambitious and worthy, I don't believe basing your sound on his approach will be beneficial. Don't become a clone, use his influence but as soon as you are comfortable with the segments of his playing, turn it around and make it your own...That is what Yngwie did hence when you hear a tune by Malmsteen it has his signature and is immediately recognizable, like Van Halen, M Schenker and many others.

Good Luck and Have fun...
Watch your hearing... Tinitus is not something to aspire to...

Thank you, guys! :D

Yes, I was about to point to DiMarzios as well. "Moby" sounds very close but I think you'll need a tiny, tiny bit more output for the lead tones.
On the other hand .... a boost pedal might be just as good!

As far as the noise gates are concernd:
You gotta be careful with those. If you set the threshold too low, you have no hum and no sustain!! It'll cut off your sustain as soon as the volume of the tone get's under the threshold.

Noisegates can help but it's always a walk on the edge to find max hum cancellation while having max sustain. I like'em anyway, they can be very helpfull.

Hmmmm..... that's a completely different sound compared to the first video and certainly no stock pickups! :?
The first one could've been stock PUs. (not sure but I would bet, they don't sound like DiMarzios to me!

I just hope you don't mean my post because it wasn't meant that way!
I'm not a fan but hell, there's some really cool recordings from Yngwie.
He's a great player but unfortunately a lot of his songs lose themselves in a nerv killing machine gun fire of diddel-diddel-diddle.
It's a matter of taste.
I'm a big fan of Steve Vai but still there's songs which go on my nerves when he gets too experimental.

All this means IN NO WAY that I want to talk bad about a fantastic guitar artist.

I hope I don't get misunderstood. He's great but I'm just not a fan. In spite of that I often listen to some of his songs, watch his videos on youtube and even consider to check out how a scallopped neck feels!

(1st ) Congrats Smokin Frets.. Put the guitar away for the week, unless she is completely cool with it ..

OP you might also want to listen to Classical Violin players like Anne Sophie Mutter, Nadja Salerno Sonnenberg,
Rachel Podger's Baroque Violin, complete Sonatas and Partitas for violin solo by Johan Sebastian Bach is a great barometer to Yngwie's music.

One thing I don't have to worry about.
She "forces" me to play at least every second or third day
She's really hot for it.

Thanx for your good wishes.

Cheers for all the replies guys, tons of info there!

To clear some things, I'm not such a big fan of Yngwie, but damn, some of his early stuff just amazes me! The reason why I'm looking for a strat much like his is because I really love his tone, and as you can see I'd rather not have his sig guitar (for which, even if I play something super original, I'd get the "clone" comments).

I'm not that afraid of becoming a clone because I really listen to tons of guitar and non-guitar oriented music. There's straightforward chugga chugga metal, neoclassic, even blues and jazz (my father often listen to those), and I absolutely love classical music. I think I can learn a ton from classical, and my favourite composer is Vivaldi. Of course, I listen to the other greats, like Beethoven and whatnot.

The amp is actually fantastic at lower volumes (which is not that common, being a tube amp), but sometimes I put it a bit higher and just enjoy. No complaints so far from neighbours. Unfortunately I already have tinnitus, but it's not because of the amp or my playing, but because of a row of gigs and stuff. I'm optimistic about it, and am definitely not planning to kill myself because of it. :)

It's something I would not wish to anyone, but if you got tinnitus problems send me a PM!

I still have around 3 months in which I'll earn the rest of the money I need, and I'll decide on the guitar during this period. Thanks guys!
