Depends on the playability and the fret life factor....if all in pristine condition it can cost more than getting a new one.....imo...

well, if you go by car rules, the item must be at least 20 years old to be considered a classic item. so if the guitar was made before 1988, it would be a classic. meaning the price would be elevated because of the collectability of the guitar. so if the guitar is in good condition, it would be cheaper to buy a new one.

but also, if you get a new one, you would be missing out on a classic guitar.

if you are low on cash, you might want to get a new guitar, and not pay a high price. but if you've got the money, i would go for the 80's guitar, considering if it is in good condition or not.

this reasoning is based on car rules, not guitar rules. so just play the guitar, and see which you like best.

There's also the problem of quality. The early 80's aren't considered the best years of strats by a long shot. There were a lot of problems back then. That doesn't mean there weren't some nice ones made. But there were a lot of lemons.
