So i was playing my Mex Strat and have no probs, being a little crazy with the tremolo, but nothing out of the ordinary. After that i unscrewed the bar and set my guitar aside. A couple days later, I go to put the bar back in to resume playing (clearly I have no issue playing a badly tuned instrument) and the bar won't screw in. It's like the inside of the bridge was stripped or something. I just found it bizarre. Bummer, no more whammy bar fanaticism. Hey, just another excuse to drop a Super Vee in there.

Did the tiny trem arm tension spring pop out and is sitting in the arm hole?
Usually if they pop out they just disappear.

It sounds like the tension spring fell out. Fender suggests that you place tape over the hole when you don't have the trem arm in. The Deluxe trem doesn't use the spring and the arm pushes ("pops") in and pulls out.

That might've been it. Thanks for the help. To be honest, I didn't really know that they had springs inside there. I'll be sure to remember that when I replace it. And thanks for the tape idea.

I don't use the trem arms anymore. I just rock the bridge assembly with the palm of my hand for a gentle, smooth vibrato... I suppose I'm missing a great deal here?

Yes, you're missing the true vibrato; you're only modulating between the note and a slightly higher note. With the bar, you can produce a true vibrato that goes below and above the target note.

I think Jeff Beck pioneered that technique. He does it all the time... a little bit more than I can handle actually as he pushes to some extremes (you're still a god Mr. Beck). Even still he uses the tremolo arm for vibrato as pushing on the bridge on increases pitch up from floating center.

Here's a little tip for you: If you put a small kink in the tremolo arm spring, it won't fall out when you remove the arm.

Fron Callaham's website:

"The Fender solution is a heavy spring in the bottom of the block. This spring causes the threads to gall and suddenly the arm is locked in the block and the only way to remove it is to break it off. Most people loss this spring without even knowing it, which is good. But trying to replace it is a mistake."

I'm guessing the spring isn't the problem...actually, I don't use the spring, and have no issues with my trem, and I use it kinda like a Floyd sometimes!

You can also use a spring from a ball point pen.

Hey, man, welcome back after your short hiatus!

You can get a bag of the springs from Musicians Friend. Just hit their website and use their search engine and search for "fender parts"... You'll be amazed!
