up until today, i was gassing for a JA-90 thinline tele. after more investigation, and the difficulty of looking past how amazing it looks and the features, and the lure of putting a bigsby on it, ive decided the pups are too hot for me, and i dont have cash or time to start modding brand new guitars.

today, i stumbled upon the blacktop HH strat in daphne blue, and i think im gassing again. im after the maple neck one, i dont really like red, and already have a black guitar, so im leaning towards the sonic blue. second choice would be the HSH blacktop in grey, but unfortunately it has the RW neck.

but ive seen so many different photos of sonic blue strats and a lot of them look very different to eachother. especially when comparing peoples own photos to the usually misleading stock shop photos.

so i wouldnt mind seeing some pics of sonic blue strats, especially maple board ones. obviously if its a blacktop even better. and any other info i need to know about the blacktops. cheers

wow that looks a lot more blue than other pictures i have seen ! the stock fender picture on the site for the sonic blue blacktop looks almost white. what i really want is a daphne blue strat, but of the strats that come in daphne, none really tickle my fancy.

thanks for the pic, nice guitar.

I own two Sonic Blue Strats, a MIM Classic Player 60s and an AVRI '61 Thin-Skin Reissue and there is a big difference in the finishes.

The Thin-Skin's finish is quite a bit darker, particularly when it's enhanced by bright sunlight.

is the difference down to where its made, or just difference in paint every year or whatever ? it looks to me quite a difference to be an accident.

The vintage Sonic Blue finish is a darker blend. It's also nitrocellulose lacquer compared to the MIM Classic Player's and Blacktop's polyurethane. One's vintage and darker, one's modern and lighter. I'm obviously a fan of both. :)

The one on the right looks more like Daphne Blue.

The angle and intensity of the sunlight makes a big difference in how dark the Sonic Blue looks. Here's another outdoor shot in brighter sunlight.

And here's an indoor pic with the finish looking much darker.

It's difficult to believe it's the same guitar.

I've been gassing hard for a Daphne Blue strat with maple board just like Clapton used on the Crossroads 2010 festival... single-ply pickguard, just like this one but without the noiseless pickups:
