Hey folks.

New to this forum, but I have a question, i hope someone here is able to answer. I've been searching for some usefull info about my MIJ 62 RI, but its apparantly not to easi to come by.

I recently got this 62 RI MIJ in a trade with a G&L. It's a great guitar. The electronic parts were rather bad, but i've changed pots etc., and now it actually sounds as good as it feels. Im truly impressed with it. I changed the pickguard to tortoise, but it was born with reliced/aged 'white' parts.

The thing is tho, people find it hard to believe, that it's a 62 RI in this finish. Sonic blue over sunburst. It looks and feels like the original finish, and i even know someone who has one just like it.

The serialnumber checks out and i have played and owned enough guitars to know, that there is nothing fake about it. I just wanted to know, if theres some general info on these relic 62.

Serial says: (s/n) A031153 (So

Are they limited runs or?

A few pictures of the guitar:

Thanks :)

Many original vintage Strats that were finished in a custom Duco color at the factory actually began life as sunburst guitars. In a lot of cases, the paint-shop supervisor would mark some specific sunburst bodies as "substandard" for a variety of different reasons then order them refinished in a solid opaque color. The reasons might include poor or unattractive grain, excessive knots, or mismatched pieces. The refin was applied right over the "defective" sunburst finish with little or no additional prepping. Apparently, your MIJ re-issue was built as a factory relic and this detail was faithfully replicated. It's rare to see such authenticity in a contemporary production guitar.

Hi Arjay.

Thanks for you answer. I am aware of the history, and tho its not a CS its a nicely replicated relic (seen worse on CS guitars).

So its not the fact that this guitar is sonic over sunburst, but the fact that its a MIJ 62 RI in this finish im wondering about. Apparantly its rather rare. And in 96-97 relic wasnt that big. So it makes me wonder, if they just decided to do some runs with relic?

So... Did they ever make 62 RI MIJ in relic from factory? I guess thats the question :)

Old thread come back to life.

I don't think I ever saw any Japanese Fender relics. This was a first.
Anyone else?

I guess I should surf my favorite Japanese sites.

The Edwards brand did relics.
