Hi. Are you discussing the Strat-Plus-Deluxe-Ultra Lace Sensor pickups in your noiseless pickup discussion? Please help me follow your comments with the N3s, vintage noiseless, and the Deluxe Strat being lifeless. Thanks. Toppscore :)

Wasn't trying to be confusing, honest! The point is that I currently own the Plus and American Standard Deluxe (with the three golds), the Plus Deluxe (with the Blue Silver Silver setup), a Clapton with the vintage noiseless set and in the past have owned the Deluxe with the vintage noiseless, several Deluxes with SCNs and have recently acquired a Deluxe with N3s. While I find that the Deluxes all play very well and are very nicely put together, soundwise they just don't do it for me. I prefer the Sensors over all of Fender's noiseless offerings. Incidentally on the subject of noiseless pickups - Kinmans are really really good. But I guess that that is a subject for another thread!

Thanks. I am now TOTALLY UNconfused. Much appreciated.

I was thinking of selling my 1996 Gem Mint Fender Plus Deluxe,
because I have a 1990 Fender Plus Ultra.

I am seeking tones.
Do you feel that the Plus is worth keeping if you have a Plus Deluxe?
Do you feel that the Plus Deluxe is worth keeping if you have a Plus Ultra?

Can the Plus Deluxe do EVERYTHING a Plus can do?
Can the Plus Ultra do EVERYTHING a Plus or a Plus Deluxe can do?

Besides collecting and typical OCD issues ( ),
is/are there any reason(s) to have more than a Plus ULTRA?
IF, and ONLY IF the Fender Plus Ultra can do it all???

What do you, Xhefri or John C. think, feel, believe and know to be true?

***Really, anyone can join in and share. Thanks. Toppscore 8)

I recently purchased my first 87? Strat Plus E4 series could not ask for anything else.
I just have one curiosity which Im sure has been already answered but I couldnt find. Why the sheen on the maple necks are so different if anyone knows I would love to see an explanation.
Thank you

Ah, the million dollar question - how many guitars does one need? Well, as my long suffering wife says, you've only got one pair of hands! In truth, a good strat can do most of what you need an electric guitar for and, if I am being totally honest, a '52 tele is probably the only guitar that you'd ever really need!

On the Plus question, the Plus and the Plus Deluxe do sound different so, for that reason alone, it is worth having both. I don't have an ultra but the other guitarist in our band does, and it is a very nice instrument. Can it do it all? Well, it's a strat at the end of the day. Mind you, the Clapton is one hell of a versatile guitar - that mid boost really thickens up the single coil tone, so in that respect, it does things that neither the Plus/Deluxe or Ultra can do.

Off comes the neck, and it is stamped.... (drum roll).....Dec 08 1990. So there, a late 90 issue. The body pocket is Jan 01, and the year is smeared, so I will assume 1991. (would they have been working New Years Day?) Strange that the E9 sticker neck lasted in the parts bin for a whole year while Ultras were assembled. So, did Fender put stickers on necks before they went in the bin, or was the sticker added during final assembly and some old stickers were still in the pile?

Cool story on your Ultra. From what I've read on Fender's production methods the neck date stamp is put on when the neck is completely finished and ready to go to assembly - I suppose that means after they consider the finish to be "cured". Now the headstock decals including the serial number on modern (i.e. non-reissue) are applied under the finish. Since you Ultra's neck is dated December 8, 1990 it was likely completed (sanded, decalled, and finished) within a week or two of that date. I suspect that whomever decaled your guitar's neck just wound up putting on the "E9" serial number decal instead of an "N0" decal. Fender probably had these hanging around and it was just in the stack and got used.

Now about the body stamp of with a Jan 01 date - not sure why someone was working on New Year's day, but if they had to get a shipment out I guess that someone could have come in to do a little work.

I don't see why you wouldn't want to keep them both - because of the pickup placement the bridge pickup of the Plus Deluxe is always going to sound slightly different from either of the "individual coil" tones of the Ultra.

If you just don't play the Plus Deluxe and always play the Ultra that is one thing, but since you haven't had either very long I would keep them both and explore the tones.

You know I never wound up buying either a Plus Deluxe or an Ultra - I had a falling out with the Fender dealer in the city I was living in at the time: they quoted me a killer deal on the Ultra, but I wanted to clear spending the cash with my wife. When I came back the guitar was gone off the wall so I moved on. The store was getting ready to relocate and when they opened in the new location low and behold that same Strat Ultra was hanging on the wall (I had a guys business card with the s/n and price on it). They refused to get any closer to my quoted price than $200, so to hell with them - they just didn't want to honor the deal the one guy (who was let go when they moved) had given me. I wound up getting a PRS CE Maple Top for a bit less than the Ultra (right before PRS had a massive price increase in 1992).

Is not it interesting how we live out our lives by the silliest decisions we make?
I have no clue why I do not like Marshall amps and Gibson guitars?
Thank gosh there are Fender amps and Fender/Gretsch/Ibanez guitars

I owned a '87 Strat Plus. My first Strat and one of the best I've ever owned. Unfortunately I parted ways with it. Don't ask why. It's a long and sorted tails

I can't complain though. If I hadn't sold it I wouldn't have purchased my '01 Candy Green Clapton Strat two years later.

What is it about Eric Clapton and the Clapton Stratocasters?

I am not a Clapton Fan since Derek & The Dominos
or his first two solo albums: "Eric Clapton" & "461 Oceanfront Boulevard"

With Cream, Delaney & Bonnie, Derek & Dominos,
Eric Clapton was totally awesome :!: :!: :!: RIGHT :?: :?: :?:

Since 1975, Clapton has been totally whinnny boring complaining
and his voice is irritable to me. I assure you this is my opinion.
This is a very popular opinion. If you disagree, there are many who will, but,
also there are many who feel Pre-1975 Clapton is a completely different talent/musician.

His best sounds/tones & vocals were not with Fender equipment.
I believe Clapton was great with Gibsons and Marshalls, right???
IMHO, I believe when Clapton changed to Fender, his life also changed.

Granted, since 1975 he has sold millions of albums, and also granted that
since 1975 there are a few good hit songs, but NOTHING like from Yardbirds,
John Mayall, Cream, Blind Faith, Delaney & Derek. RIGHT???

Anyway, maybe "Clapton WAS GOD" thirty-five years ago to forty-five years ago . . . .
but, lately, IMHO he is boring

So, what is it about Fender's Eric Clapton Guitars and Fender's Eric Clapton Twinolux Amps
that are soooooo "God Loving Good"? Why buy one over another similar guitar or amp?

PLMK. Thanks. Toppscore 8)

I am in Canada right now with my work so I am using an iPad, which is not always too Forum friendly. If one has an Ultra there is no need for a DX plus, as they both have the same types of pickups in the neck and middle. The ultra just has better switching IMHO and two reds in the bridge. But having a Standard Plus is a whole different beast as it has 3 gold laces and a 50s tone that the DX and the Ultra does not quite have. BUT if you can afford it, why not 2 or 3 of each?...

Though I disagree with you on some points, I can totally understand what you are saying. I would say that I don't like all things EC. I will say that the "Journey Man," "From the Cradle" and the sound track for the movie, "Rush" are some of my favorite Clapton album.

In fact "From the Cradle" is, in my opinion, is his best work. I'm not really happy with anything he has done since the "Pilgrim," album and "Reptile" was very disappointing.

On a final note I feel that the Cream Reunion concert was awesome. Some of the songs they did are better, like "Outside Woman Blues" and "I'm So Glad" are better than the original version.

As for his guitars. Well I've owned two Les Pauls and have ended selling both of them. The Clapton Strat is a wonderful guitar, but I do prefer the older ones with out the current pickups.

What do you think of the Riding with the King album with BB King?
Do you like the Pre-1975 Clapton when he was more of a Marshall/Gibson man
or since 1975 as he has been more with the Fender products?

I wasn't impressed with Riding with the King. Mainly because I had been listeniwasng to both B.B. King and Clapton for years and I was little tired of hearing another version of some song I already owned.

I love Clapton's pre-'75 sound. Don't forget Clapton had been using Fender guitars before '75. He owned a red Tele, Brownie (Strat he bought in I think '67) and believe it or not a Jazzmaster he gave to Chris Deja from the Yardbirds.

I like a lot of stuff from the '70s, but I don't feel that it's his best period. I love how Clapton can build emotional tension when playing Strat quietly. For me Clapton was only my instroduction into the Blues. From him I went to Muddy, Hubert Sumlin, Albert King, Freddy King, B.B. King, and most notably Buddy Guy, who I think was one of the best blues guitarist of the '50s and '60s.

Paris. Thank you for your share.
I am going to give "Cradle" & "Pilgrim" more thought.
I will have to hunt for the Cream reunion concert.

By the way, when did Eric Clapton use Strats with Lace Sensor pickups.
Did Clapton play on the Strat Plus, Strat Plus Deluxe or the Strat Plus Ultra?

Thanks to anybody for their answers :)

Yeah, of course, his original signature guitars had three Lace Golds. He only switched over to the vintage noiseless in 2000 or thereabouts.

Thanks. I was never a Clapton fan, so I did not know about
Lace Sensors and Clapton, until recently.

Any other well known guitarists who use Fender Stratocasters with Lace Sensors?

Thanks. Toppscore :)
