I took my Highway 1 into into the shop to have it worked on, put Fat 50's in it, rewired, new caps, pots, and switch. When I get it out it plays like a dream. The tech asks me if I would be interested in selling it or trading it in on another guitar in the shop. I tell him that I like my guitar and I am not interested in getting rid of it. He then offers to do a straight trade for a new 2011 CAR Fender Stratocaster that they still have in the shop. I tell him I would consider for a 2012 model but not a 2011 model, I already have a 2011. He says that he can't quite pull that off at this time.

So my question is have you ever been offered to trade your beloved guitar for another from the shop you take your guitars to have work done to it? It left me feeling a little weird, but also impressed with the fact that someone else likes my guitar enough to want it.

If a SHOP(!!!!) makes an offer like this, KEEP THE GUITAR!!!!

Shops make no gifts, they want BARGAIN!!!! Same is for the sellers!! He probably wants it for himself.

If you're happy with it, it wouldn't make sense to swap/trade anyway!

My guess:
Since the recent cancelling of the Highway One line.....your guitar guy is trying to be slick.
Highways may have gone up slightly in value since their cancellation!!

You've got a great guitar there.....(I've got 9 Highways...I know!).........do yourself a favor.....KEEP IT!!!

Does CAR = Custom American Reissue?
Can you tell more about the shop's Strat? Special features? Collectibility?

On EBay there are listed many Highway One's between $700-$800.
The Fender MIM Fat Strats seem to be selling $100-$200 less than MIA Highway Ones.

I have a couple of HSS MIM Fat Strats, hot-rodded with better pickups and bridge upgrades.
They play great.

Wondering if your MIM Fat Strat upgrades and known familiarity would be worth a new Highway One?

Take care. Toppscore 8)

Actually, there's no "metalflake" component to CAR. It's a tinted top coat sprayed over a metallic base......

Image

This optional finish replaced Shell Pink as a custom Duco color around 1963 and initially used silver as a base. Gold was introduced as an undercoat in 1966.

when a shop makes an offer to trade, they are ALWAYS going to come out on top. They do not make an offer that they will not profit from unless the guy wanted the guitar for himself - and even then, he is not likely to be giving you a truly even trade.

Keep your guitar.

I've had offers made on guitars I owned in the past and always kept them. I've often had shops or luthiers who sold used instruments on the side ask me to talk to them first before selling some guitars I've owned. In these cases it wasn't a bad thing, because they were usually able to line up a buyer pretty quickly and it was worth paying them a small commission on the sale of the guitar. It sure beat going to a pawn shop or having to deal with letting strangers into my home.

Yes. You do need to know your guitar and vintage amp stuff.
My first three transactions I got some interesting things that I found out years later.

I bought a 1970 Fender Stratocaster that turned out to be a 1971 body and a 1975 neck.

I bought a 1962 Fender 1x12 6G4A Super Amp I learned later should have been 2x10.

I bought a Brand New Telecaster from a San Diego Fender Dealer. Neck serial number
stated 1978. Neck butt-end number stated 1982. Body cavity sticker stated 1978.
Turns out, I must have purchased in in 1982, as Fender used 1978 serial numbers on guitars
for years until 1983. And, Fender still had individual serial numbers for each year, anyway.

Thanks to working the forums the past eight months, mistakes are less and less.
Usually, EBay connivery is my biggest problem.

During the past six months I have opened 23 EBay/Paypal cases as a buyer of amps,
speakers & guitars. I won all the cases with one pending for a final decision on May 30th.

I bought a 1965 Fender 1x12 Deluxe Reverb. When it arrived, there was total
devastion on the amp bottom, 50% missing tolex, wood rot. all four corners
in bad rotted shape, etc. ~ all was hidden from the picture angles and his 100%
positive feedback description claim was: "except for a tear on the bottom of the amp,
everything else is in great shape". Tons of more issues as well.
Ebay told me to take it to a repair shop to get an estimate.
I've got photos. We shall see. Next week is the moment of truth.

Lesson for all to learn. Toppscore 8)

I am definately keeping my Highway 1. Since I purchaced it, it has been the best playing Stratocaster in my collection. And now the best sounding too.

The Tech in the shop did say he wanted the guitar for himself, and it turns out that the 2011 American Standard was actually a used one that someone returned (with the pickguard film and sticker still intact).
