Hi,

Previously loyal to Ibanez and PRS, now its time that I tried Fender. However 3 quick questions:

1. What is the pickup routing on the SSS Delux model? Is it HSS? (hopefully yes so I can install a humbucker at a later date)

2. Many reviewers (on other forums) of the American Delux strats are complaining about the pickups saying that they just dont sound like the traditional 'bright' fender pickups, they are much darker and muddy, and that the roller nuts are too low resulting in alot of low E buzz - no bell like tones has anyone on here got any experience of this?

3. Because of the points in 2. above, I'm being steered towards the new American Standard series, however I much prefer the idea of locking tuners!

Thanks guys,

Chris

I just bought an American Deluxe SSS about a month ago. The first five sound positions (standard strat sounds) do sound slightly different, but I still like the way they sound. I love the new five positions, and I can get some great sounds from the 2nd five positions. I've heard people complain about the new sounds, and some even complain about the standard five positions, but I love the way the guitar sounds. Especially through my Fender tube amp. I consider it the best sounding guitar of my four guitars.

So.....like most other things with guitars and amps......it's a personal thing. So probably you should go to a music store, play one and see for yourself, then make the decision.

Oh yeah........the SSS (mine) does not have a roller nut.

The pickups on the Am Dlx are SCN noiseless stacked humbuckers that are designed to be "Strat-like" while eliminating all hum associated with single-coil pickups. There's always a trade-off when hum cancelling is involved. Imho, no noiseless available that I have heard truly can replicate the classic, complex tone found in several single coils Fender offers including the Texas Specials that I've got in my slightly hotrodded Highway One. Also, the Texas Specials and several other of Fenders Custom Shop pickup upgrades offer reverse-wound middle pickups that cancel hum, and so do the American Standard Strats.

Hi chris101. I own an American deluxe HSS (2005) with SCN pick-ups (standard on this model) and used to be a Gibson Les Paul player. I have to agree that the SCN pick-ups sounds darker and accentuate midd's more that the vintage single coils. It does not have the "sparkle" that is so loved by vintage Strat fans.
What you have to keep in mind however is the kind os music you prefer to play. I found that because of the SCN's darker sound they are much more friendly to high gain distortion and overdrive settings than vintage coils. If you prefer hard rock or heavier styles you might find the SCN pick-ups more to your liking.
I use my "vintage sound-a-like" strat for all my clean and slightly dirty recordings and my Deluxe HSS for those hard rock and heavier sounds. I recommend that you play them in your local music store and decide yourself. For me, I love both sounds equally.

I've compared 2008 standard strat and the Am deluxe strat. STD sounds much brighter comparing to the deluxe model BUT the tuners and the nutwork on the deluxe is way better then the 2008 standard cause u can hear some PING sound when using tremolo on the STD, but you can fix that by using a graphite (pen). The neck on the STD feels better because of the glossy fretboard and the guitar gives a little bit more sustain......not really noticiable. The bridge saddles on the STD give out a really veintage strat sound, the two-point tremolo is better than the 6-point 'cause it back to tune exactly when using a whammy bar a lot. But the whammy bar doesn't looks so strong compared to the one on the DLX model- it just stays where you left it, it doesnt swings like the pop-in arm.

To your question about the routing, based on some things that I've read the routing is the same for SSS & HSS so that they can use the same body and just use different pups. I could be wrong in this, but I don't think so. I don't own an SSS (mine's an HSS) so I can't say from personal experience.

If you got the Standard and didn't like the tuners you could always upgrade to locking tuners. No midifications needed to do this. Just a lil extra cash. Maybe get the store to throw them in for you or get a discount on them.

My advise - get the best strat you can afford... consider a quote from the custom shop and list every thing you want.
