Hello there!
I have a problem with my fender stratocaster, that the tones die to fast. Here is an example i have recorded:
http://rapidshare.de/files/38957109/Dal ... _.mp3.html

My amp was set to max when i recorded this clip

If you listen to other guitar players that use the same guitar, you can hear how muth sustain they have.
What shall i do to end this?
I have just switched strings, and my strings are set to the "highest".
Please help a desperate soul!

I saw shapes similar to a Strat at that link, but not a Strat. If your sustain is dying probably the pickups are close to the strings and the magnetic pull is interfering. You may want to try lowering the pickups heights.

Might need to take it into a shop to make sure the neck/body joint is tight if nothing else works, that's where a lot of bolted neck guitars lose string energy. You can also unstring it and try to tighten the screws yourself. Don't over do it, as you can strip the holes out or damage the screw heads.

It could be the nut is improperly cut or the saddles also. I'd try a tech. It's worth the money.

I have heard that changing the tremelo sustain block(where the strings feed thru) can improve sustain. I have seen ads for an aftermarket unit in GP, tho I forget the brand name. Also a deeply notched nut can dampen sustain. I had a guitar with a brass nut, and it had nice sustain and a very bright tone.

Hi Denkath,

Gehe zu Deinem Gutiar Shop in Deiner Nähe und lasse sie dort untersuchen und evtl. neu einstellen. Der Einstellservice wird oft kostenlos gemacht, hängt vom Händler ab.

Grüsse

Hi Denkath

Yes, get an aftermarket (preferably Callaham ) tremolo block and fit it using the screws on the bridge . This should improve both tone and sustain - cheaper one's (e.g. Fender ) are O.K. as long as they're either solid steel or brass .

Check the action is set high enough - too low will kill tone and sustain . A little neck relief (bend) can help - try a small adjustment to the truss rod - slackening it off by quarter turns is safe and should do the trick .

Are you using 10's ? That would be good but remember that if you change string guage everything will need to be adjusted (ie. string action and bridge settings as well as neck relief ) .

A personal thing is that heavier tuners (machine heads ) give more tone/sustain - I use sperzals - and your guitar won't go out of tune even with tremolo abuse !!!!! Cool.

Good luck !

This is some really good advise. I just decided to do a complete setup on my 2000 MIM strat. I think the last time I removed the back cover, I didn't know what the tremolo block was! Now that I've studied the situation, I realized that my MIM strat had basically 1/2 of a trem block (or perhaps better to call it the tone block?)

Bottom line is that the Callaham replacement block for your MIM will help the tone and sustain immensely!
