Hey guys!

Just a quick question, I recently decided to block my strat trem becuase I didnt use it, And yeah a strats a strat!

Using 2 pence and 5 pence peices on either side of the block rather than cutting/sanding a block of wood after seeing a few dudes do it on youtube, Im happy with the sound with no real affect to sustain/tone and all that stuff,

I was just wondering has anybody else done this? Ever? Seeing as it seems quite a crazy thing to do!

Cheers, Jack :D

Hey Jack,

I don´t block the Fender trem at all. I decked the Floyd on my Charvel though.
I like the Fender vintage floating.

Cheers,
Robin

I recently blocked all the vintage style bridges on my Strats using a matchbox sized piece of poplar and about 2 to 3 brass plates.

I was going to just use the piece of wood, but it was too small and left to much space between the body and the trem block. So I then got some 1/8"X1/2"X1 1/2" brass plates to fill in the gap the wood could not. It worked beautifully and to my ears (or it could be my brain) it seemed that the guitar resonated more.

I have three reasons for using something to brace between the body and the trem block.
1. I feel that it removes tension from the springs so they vibrate more. To me this is part of what effects a Strat's over all sound. When you just crank the bridge flush to the body, without blocking it with something, there is so much tension on the springs that I feel you lose something.
2. Again, this could all be in my head, but I feel that block to body contact changes how the guitar body resonates.
3. I don't use a vibrato.

I have used pennies before, but I soldered 4 stacks of them together into one big copper plug. this way they wouldn't fall out or anything. it worked about the same as wood, but I did notice a slight sustain increase from the added mass.

I like to use vibrato sometimes. I don't stress about string breakage cause I always bring more than one guitar when I leave home.

I simply tighten the screws of the spring claw and put in 5 springs. That's it! Nothing moves, no problem with tuning stability or playability due to the trem being tilted slightly backwards.

IMHO blocks or other stuff in the trem cavity only make sense with Floyd Rose style trems because they go back really far.

I don't mind the tiny difference in playing feel when palm muting the strings with a tightened trem like mine.

No change in playability or sustain and string height can be easily adjusted, if necessary at all.

Only ONE disadvantage: the holes in the trem block for the strings are not aligned with the standard trem covers. I don't care, I don't have them on my guitars anyway.
