It isn't perfect - but considering that you get like 4 guitars in one (albethey emulated), 4 alternate tunings + 12-string (these work FLAWLESSLY), and a quality Strat (this isn't some crappy, low-cost, or MIM Strat, it's MIA) what exactly are you losing here?

There is no noticeable delay in the VG pickup (like you WILL get with any MIDI VG pickup to GR synth). Some have complained about disparity between volume of the VG emulations and the straight sound - I haven't noticed it. This is probably more a function of the setup and/or batteries than the VG system itself.

So, you can buy a Stratocaster, Telecaster, steel-string electro-acoustic, a 12-string electro-acoustic, another Strat with humbuckers, tune them up and down to alternate tunings... (what's that about now, $6000) or you can use this as a nice all-in-one guitar.

I'll admit that the biggest drawback here (besides others' opinions on the sound modelling) is that while the cord is plugged in, the batteries are being drawn-down. A switch to turn the VG system on/off would be nice for battery conservation when the VG system isn't being used (with the emulation to 'N' this would be a simple way to switch).

I don't know. Is the Gibson LP HD.6-X Pro Digital (at a whopping $3500! (est. from MSRP)) going to be seriously as good as it empties your wallet? We'll see... ;)

I just don't get the VG! I mean why mess with perfection? I tried one at my local Guitar Center and I wasn't that impressed. Fender doesn't do a perfect job of setting up any guitar that doesn't come out of the custom shop. IMHO I don't think Robert Fripp would like this one. That having been said....why mess with a good thing?

Can't afford more than one guitar? ;)

If so, okay, this probably isn't the guitar to be your lone workhorse. I have six (and realize that that's nothing compared to the real 'collectors' out there and around here). So having a more novel item doesn't bother me.

The short answer is no. They aren't worth it. I think all the sounds are a bit artificial. Its really no different than using an effects pedal. When have you heard a good electric to acoustic pedal, for instance? The VG is no better. It seems my bandmate is always running out of battery at the worst time. The blinking blue light is supposed to mean there is a half hour of power left. Reality is that you are lucky to finish the song you're playing. The VG is well built, just like any American Strat. I prefer vintage tint necks, so I'm not crazy about the whitish neck color. Also, there are limited body colors. The bottom line is the sound. From my limited experience listening to my band mate, I've not been that impressed. I'm also not a player that needs all of that diversity. I don't switch guitar during a set, so I'm not interested in multiple sounds. I'd rather have a guitar that is a master of what it does best, and not a jack of all trades.
