Hi everybody,

Would any of you be able to tell me what size fretwire this is from this picture? I have a feeling it's Dunlop 6100, but I'm not sure. It sort of looks like my old Highway One Strat which had jumbo fretwire. For all I know it could just be 6105. Any help? Thanks! =)

My guess is 6150, doesn't look quite as narrow and tall as a 6105 kinda looks a tad wider with less crown height . I really cannot tell without having my hands on it, so this is a bit futile.
can you get a pair of calipers on it? or are you just bored?

this may help. but we are dealing with such small measurements its near impossible to determine with a photo.

Right - it's absolutely impossible to tell from photos. I couldn't do it even if I had the guitar in my hands: you need a digital caliper to be sure of the tiny differences between wires.

StratLovesLenny, is there some particular reason you are trying to ID fretwire from a photo? Maybe the underlying issue is something we can help with.

Cheers - C

No, no underlying issue, it's just my very big curiosity over John Mayer's "Black One" Stratocaster and its history/relationship with the SRV #1 Stratocaster. The pictures are actually of both the real Black One and the masterbuilt replicas (real one is on the bottom right).

I'm very curious over the flow of specs through the FCS. When the FCS specc'd #1 out, the guitar had its original neck. To my understanding, it's been refretted multiple times, and the fretwire of the day at that time was 6100 I believe. My interest sparked over this video: http://youtu.be/RCp0Shxmozk?t=1m39s There's a good shot of the frets at 1:39, but hard to tell though since the frets are so worn down.

Anyway, the Black Mayer Strat was constructed using a neck for an SRV #1 Tribute. I've always wondered what kind of radius and fretwire the Black One has because the neck specs of the SRV #1 Tribute are a little ambiguous (since the neck probably started out as a 7.5", has been refretted, worn down, and then subsequently interpreted by the FCS). Also, because I've always had it in the back of my head that I may be getting a Mayer masterbuilt if one happens to pop up. A lot of needless curiosity here, haha. Maybe someone can fill me in on some history.

To know exactly what he has on it you would have to measure it or ask him

unless you know someone that is fantastic at geometry and can calculate this based on a known measurement in the photo like a fret marker. you are SOL

anyways in reality that detail is frivolous, besides I am sure it is close to what is on his signature.
