These were the predecessors to the current MIM Deluxe series - there was also a Tele with a vintage-style Tele bridge and a splittable neck humbucker.

John, I think you are right, I never heard about this strat before

My first strat was a '95 Stratocaster Special. I remember it playing really well, had smallish frets. The coil splitting was cool. A curious thing about it was that it was sunburst on the front but all black on the back. A cost saving measure of the time I guess.

I traded it in for an Ibanez Talman

Ok guys so I went for it and purchased the guitar, its quite a weighty axe but very nice.
the serial number is indeed on the back of the headstock MN543024 and it does say made in Mexico.
seems to be a very guitar although I cant plug it in till I get home tonight when I get home.
