Aha I've had an idea and being the schizo sunuvabitch I am I'm going to tell you ...

Why not fit another tremolo spring to the block but in the other direction ....

So their are two pulling it one way and one pulling it up this would make the tremolo

stiffer and add to tone , sustain and harmonics . Reduce deflection of the tremolo when

bending a string . Reduce deflection for quick detuners . And alter whatever harmonic the

springs are tuned to .

It would be most usefull on guitars that have cutaway tremolo blocks .

Discuss

How on earth would that add to the sustain and the harmonics.
What would it add to the tone?

You already have the strings acting as a spring pulling in that direction. So it would achieve nothing from a physical perspective either.

+1

It would remove more wood and be difficult to anchor. I don't see how you would adjust it and in fact, it seems that if it is adjusted to exactly counter the exisiting trem springs tension (as the strings currently do) then the strings would lose all tension and just flop about.

Well it would stiffen the tremolo and the best example I can give you of that is a fixed bridge ...

Still I appreciate your efforts ...

How about for OEM's

No, it wouldn't.

In a properly set up trem, string tension equals spring tension. If you introduce a third spring, you throw that balance off. Simple mechanics would seem to indicate that to keep equilibrium between the three springs like you propose (strings are considered springs in this case), the tension of the original trem springs would have to be increased to counteract TWO opposite forces that are now acting upon the trem springs versus the force applied by the strings alone. Your third spring is pulling opposite the trem springs, so to keep the string tension constant (to maintain tune), I think the trem springs would have to be tightened.

+1 That's how I see it too.

So the bottom line seems to be that the idea is pointless.

May be a lack of understanding of the mechanical design of the Strat trem. Look closely at the top & bottom & watch what is happening when you operate the trem & note how the parts are moving, then if your idea still makes sense, try to explain it to us again. Maybe I don't understand what you are describing.

Cheers,
kev
