Hey. :D
Just wondering if someone know anything about re-magnetizing an alnico magnet. If so, I've got 3 questions for you:
Do it have any effect on the sound?
Is it possible to ruin the pickups?
And how to do it? :?:

Classic 70 Strat btw! 8)

Hey marlok,
Check out the following page at Stew-Mac (scroll down a ways):

http://www.stewmac.com/freeinfo/Electro ... -5967.html

This shows how to magnetize an uncharged alnico pole piece.
The same method may be used to flip the magnetic polarity of a pickup (to create a RW/RP pickup set) or to remagnetize some weakened/damaged magnets.

Good Luck.

Thanks a lot orvilleowner! :D
Looks even more simple than I imagined when I posted this topic. The thing i was most worried about was if I had to remove the alnico poles from the bobbins(if it would have any effect on the wire), but then i would have to rewire it to.

But I guess I'll just order some Neodymium magnets for constructing a magnetizing device then

And yes, it's for the remagnetizing of weakened pickups

If you don't have a RW/RP set, you might consider flipping the polarity of your middle pickup.

Do you have a compass handy? You probably will need one to be sure you have the orientation going in the correct way.

Surely there is no need for a compass in such a situation.
If all the pickups were same polarity same wind. Then wouldn't another magnet be enough to show that (they'd all attract or repel to the same side, depending on which way the magnet was facing).

Alnico, ain't that just a mixture of different metals and stuff that needs to be magnetized before they have any magnetic effect? I think the compass or a really weak magnet should do it, so i don't end up magnetizing it the opposite way while I'm just checking it.

How did you determine that the pups were de-magnetized?

Still a question, going to check em. but it feels like they have lost a bit of attack and sounds weaker then when i bought the guitar. But it's maybe my imagination. If I don't find any thing while checking it I'll replace the pickups. Causing climatic changes, alnico magnets can be demagnetized. Thats the reason why I want to give it a try. (A guitars life in Norway can be really cold some times while moving around between gigs and places to live)
