Does anyone know ANYTHING about Fender Starcaster Guitars?
Please add your comments:
Check the link to the Starcaster guitar

I understand the first generation of Fender Starcasters (1978-1982) were hollow body type electrics. The second generation of Fender Starcasters from 2000-2012 are Asian made and the early 2000s were better than Fender Squires.

I took a chance from a luthier and purchased a EXTREMELY CUSTOM STARCASTER. I've been in forum discussions stating/claiming all Fender guitars will have good neck wood & good body wood. That it's the finishes, hardware added later that increase each neck's quality, pricing & popularity. But, the wood on all Fender guitars should be good.

Therefore, I bought this guitar from a luthier who stripped everything off. Only the body, neck, nut & frets remained. My goal is to locate unique guitars and amplifiers that can add to the effort towards creating different & unique sounds & tones.

The first item that caught my attention were the unique five (5) up/down switches on the pickguard (check the pictures within the link. These switches offered a huge amount of pickup tone changing possibilities, along with the normal five-position Strat switch and the usual three Fender Stratocaster control knobs. The Varitone switching provides easily controlled, endless Tonal Variations using Vintage 1960s Ceramic Electronics.

I purchased the whole setup with shipping for only $300. If it did not have the Varitone Switching System installed, I would not have been interested. Then, understanding what the luthier added to the base guitar body & wood, is outstanding to me.

Please, tell me what you think or have experienced???

INFO: The Body and Neck of this STARCASTER STRAT are CNC machined; like all production guitars produced these days....impossible to foul up on CNC cutter. These guitars are completed by apprentices, and require a heavily detailed Overhaul and set-up (above product's delivered state) to bring out the true abilities the body and neck possess. The body, neck, frets and string nut are original. All other parts are updated premium hardware and all wiring, controls, and electronics have been Upgraded with Premium components.

FULLY OVERHAULED and Professionally Set-up
Unique varitone switching provides easily controlled, endless Tonal Variations using Vintage Ceramic 1960's Fender OEM SPRAGUE Z5U Dielectric 0.10 & 0.022mfd (Fender also used Z5V), SPRAGUE Vitamin Q Paper/Foil/Oil Capacitors 0.010mfd, Fast Brand P/F in Oil 0.022mfd.

SPECS: Strung with DR 11's. Locking Tuners. Large mass steel, Tone/Resonater trem block. Mod 6 point Fulcrum trem, much better than pivot trem. Steel Bridge Plate for that Fender EDGE. Light alloy string saddles for Fine Tone.
Includes Strap and Strap Locks. Fender OEM CTS 250 pots. Fender Grease Bucket treble roll off tone circuit based, using vintage Sprauge Z5U Dielectric 1960's OEM Fender Caps, with varitones 1960's PIO hermetically sealed Caps addition (5 xxxxx varitone instructions and tips included). Premium Gold tracings 5-way switch. Pure 99.99% copper wiring, 0.09ohms per foot. Vintage wound (5.9-6.0-6.1kohms loaded) pickups...Triple Wax Potted.

Full EMI RFI electronics shielding, including the pickup covers.

Vintage 1960's type control knobs. Premium pickguard. All new hardware and electronics. Custom one of a kind Headstock Grafix under lustre lacquer. "Custom" logo neck plate. 5 XXXXX switching varitone. Unique hardware configuration. Includes Full fretwork and set-up. Intonation is set for correct pitch full scale, when tuned, fretted or Harmonics at the 12th fret. Includes Fender Tuner. 40 hours into overhaul, 20 hours into headstock art. Pickguard decals are removeable, if you wish.

Includes Coffin Design Tantrum Limited Edition Hard Shell Case.

The finish looks like, and shows wear like, typical Fender OEM Polyester over Fullerplast, (finish is worn a bit*nicks*dings*scratches. Photos do not clearly show this, even though files are 14MB base. Photo #7 enlarged, does show the only major scratch...between trem back-plate and neck-plate). Neck was originally shot with Satin Lacquer, the back of which I wet sanded with 1500, and buffed out with a microfiber cloth. Very Smooth. Guitar headstock face is shot with clear lustre lacquer. The frets are in brand new condition (yes, I did lightly level, crown & dress, and polish the frets...that is part of any overhaul). STARCASTER is an older model. Neck lacquer and wood have aged nicely. This is a Basswood body, very resonant, and a Sugar Maple neck.

Most varitone switching options are self explanatory, though several switching modes offer hidden tonal values. Different amps will use different tone switching options, yet, the Guitar is adaptable to any amp. Some tonal options will work well with one amp, and some options will work better with other amps. With tube amps, all tonal options work well. Verified, sounds excellent through Blues Jr. III Blonde FSR w/Jensen 12N, Super Sonic 22, Dean Markley RM40DR, Ibanez 15 watt tube screamer, Blackstar 20 watt HT20, Vox 15watt CC tube, Fender Frontman 25R, Fender Super Champ X2, Marshall 30 watt solidstate.

My thoughts on this guitar are that it's probably a great deal for the money you paid. I personally believe a huge amount of what makes a guitar a great player is the labor that's put into it. If you let a good luthier go to town on a basic guitar with a good platform they can really make something fantastic.
That's why off the rack guitars -- even expensive ones - dont always feel that great when you play them.

I dont think you'll get a huge resale value on the guitar if you ever decide to sell it due to the Starcaster name, but if it plays as well as it described it I'd keep it personally. I saw another luthier not too long ago that also did this with Startcasters minus the varitone mod, & they were supposed to be great guitars when he was through. I thought about getting one myself but just decided I didnt need another guitar in the end.

Nice axe though. :)

The seller made 200 bucks at least. He´s a luthier? well, no way.
The guitars are made in China.
Having said that I bought a very cheap bass guitar for my daughter (less than 100) made in China. It is really a great playing and sounding bass guitar (unplugged), the electric parts are complete s**t though.

I would buy a used MiM Standard for 240 any day (which is a better guitar).

Cheers,
Robin

Thanks for the kind response. String Bender. It just arrived yesterday ~ haven't unpacked it yet. :D
Another day I'll share the results. Also, my Weber Attenuator Mass 200 arrived, so now
I can crank up all my amps from 40w to 135w and blast away with all the varitone possibilities

I figure the unique HSCase & guitar's raw basic wood without any Starcaster hardware = $175.
I paid $50 for shipping, so that's $225 of the $300 total. Do I think the rest of the labor and
custom parts are worth $75??? Absolutely outstandingly YES! I believe to have a special guitar
that has all of the varitone switching possibilities & the many custom modifications to be worth $900.
If the guitar was based on a MIM or MIA Strat, then we'd be talking more money (with case & shipping).
So, $300 for everything direct from the builder himself, makes it a keeper.

The luthier claims to have put in over 60 hours of fine tuning, passion effort, art work
setting-up special electronics and merging the neck & body correctly. He claims $300/ish in
parts including: tuners, bridge, potentiometers, high-end varitone switching kit,
control knobs, high-end pickup switch, custom pick guard, lots of super extra thick copper wiring
throughout, triple layers of shielding under the pick guard, extra shielding materials around
the cavities, and more

Even if it was ten-twenty direct hours, that is way too cool 8)
Seems like it was one of his favorite guitars, so it got special attention.

Therefore, for $175 for raw body/neck wood & HSCase (+) $75 for all the custom parts & labor
(+) $50 for the shipping, I believe it'll be a keeper to experiment for tones and sounds.

Not interested in getting money out of it. If I was, I would not have purchased it.

In general, I believe industry wide there is too much worry by too many amp buyers and too
many guitar buyers about equipment's worth. Think about all those who cry and complain
about modern guitar amps with PCBoards, yet, the modern amps have incredible sales numbers
Go figure :?

I have quite a few unique or rare or custom guitars and amps. I would not own them
if I was not be the highest eBay bidder or negotiate to meet the seller's final retail prices.
Some scavage for parts and pieces. Some like to rebuild. Some have less money.
Some have more money. Some just want it working right at the time of purchase.
Some want to make sure they can get their money back. Why? Personal preference.

Thanks again. Toppscore 8)

Thanks, Robin. I just explained a point - counter point within the above comment.
I suspect on EBay you can get a Starcaster and "quality" hard shell case and
shipping costs for $200-$250. I agree with that.

But, as I explained above, this is not the case. Different product.
Just started on Fender Starcaster wood, that is all.
Cheers. Toppscore 8)

You can but a starcaster for about 50 bucks on craigslist. The guitar will probley split in half someday. For 300 dollers you could have done much better IMO. But if you like it thats all that matters. Lets see some pics.

Exactly. I like it. At least I wanna like it :D
So far, in theory only. Tonight I open it up.
I shall report my findings.

Tomorrow, I may use it for a song or two at a party gig.
