Hey, I took my pickguard off as best I could today to find that my HH Fender body is really a HSH body. Is this common to all HH Fenders? This is great news to me becaues I wanted to convert my HH to a HSH. It looks like the hardest part will be building the pickguard.

Hmm, Im guessing that maybe Fender makes most of there bodies to be SSH to make them more interchangeable and to reduce manufacturing costs.

Ohh by the way, does anyone know where I can get a black Fender HSH pickguard? Just like the one in the picture but HSH. Thanks.

Yea, most online guitar stores don't seem to have black HSH pickguards. I ended up buying this eBay pickguard before checking back here.

It looks like the same one bpwalker65 found on eBay. Thanks for the search bpwalker65.

I read somewhere recently that Fender makes one CNC designed body that will accommodate SSS, HH, SSH then they slap in whatever pups are supposed to go with whatever style it is.

However....if I purchase a '57 Vintage Hotrod are they providing a '57 routing, which has more wood or this one size fit's all body which suits their economies of scale? The buyer is entitled to be informed. Anything marketed as 'vintage'e.g. '57'; '58' '62';50's; 60's; 70's as they do, should be routed consistent with the period. This information should appear in the 'specs' section for the guitars either under 'body' or 'unique features'.

HOW ABOUT THAT MODERATOR......SEND THAT ON TO THE CEO!!

Valid point. What I read didn't address that, and based on what our string starter provided I don't think that his HH strat falls into that category. If what I read was correct it probably only pertains to standard non-vintage production axes of which, I believe his axe is and therefore would be able to handle pretty much whatever pup configuration he wanted to use.

Its a 2003 MIM so its not vintage at all. I picked it up off eBay for about $200, so i know little about its history other then its not in production anymore. It was a good buy for my needs, its seems completely unused. Probably some kid bought it played it for a week and then it sat around for about 4 years lol.

Fender could still save a bunch of money on manufacturing if they route their bodies the way uteowl described for all non vintage strats which I believe is what they sell the most.

Precisely what they do and why. However, those familiar with the evolution of the design are aware of historical changes in not only body routing but the offset waist design and, for me, if I am purchasing an instrument which is touted as '50's vintage, THAT's what I want. A 50's body in all respects, not their standard, one size fits all, body.

This is why I have suggested elsewhere, that the type of body routing appear in the specs section for each guitar in the catalog.

I've owned three American Fender Strats (all manufactured since '96) one Mex Strat, and one Custom Shop. My experience - routing is luck of the draw. Whatever they have available on the day of manufacture and if it fits the pickup sheme they are building at the time - they use it.

More often than not, this info is "missing" from the specs.
