why would you want to replace the pickups!?

The stock pickups are just Fender American Single Coils. Not bad, but not great considering that there are other superior choices offered by Fender alone, not even considering non-Fender products: Fender Vintage Noiseless™ pickups, Powerhouse Ultra-Quiet Single-Coil Strat® Pickups, Samarium Cobalt Noiseless™ Strat® Pickups, etc.

I've had my black VG for a couple of days now, and at first, I wasn't at all sure. The sound was great, (played through a couple of Marshall 100W JCM's, but the guitar was very hard to play and to be honest, not set up at all well. I changed the strings for some 9's (they felt like very stiff 10's supplied, too thick for my style of playing) and dropped the action considerably. Voila! Instantly playable, with a very low no buzz action. I wish though that the necks were laquered like my 57 nowadays. Also, the small spring in the tremolo hole had fallen out, and was under the body in the fur of the case. Fortunately no damage. The small sticky round thing had moved to let it fall out. Ther has been some criticism of the supplied case, but I like it a lot. If it's gonna be thrown around in a truck, I'd feel happy with it, it feels like it could be safely run over with a tank! I would seriously though consider changing the pickups, especially as you retain the original pickup sound on the modelled strat anyway. (at least I understand you do?) I have 3 other strats, 2 of which have EMG pickups on. A 57 re-issue with EMG Vince Gill setup, (my favourite sounder by a LONG way), a 10 year old Californian with the EMG Dave Gilmour setup, (Still great), and a Jaguar Strat which is unchanged with the gold tele sized pickups. Was the VG worth it? (£1250UK) I think so.. :D .my wife, if she knew..probably not! :x Kenny Par Studios Par Cornwall UK

Fun , neat and some bling, bling....but I found that it was built like a squire, I did not like the quality of the guitar itself at all. I bought the American Deluxe "V" neck. A well crafted instrument. The two tone burst, maple neck. plays like butter. and costs much less.

In my opinion...Don't trade your Jazzmaster for a VG. It's too unique a guitar to take lightly. Not that the VG isn't nice...but you'll regret losing the Jazzmaster (unless it's a dog). I like my VG for the most part - particularly the options it has...BUT - it goes through batteries like nobody's business...and I really don't think the American Strat stock pickups have the oomphh! some of my other strats have. Even though the options are terrific I think, for about the same money, the Eric Johnson strat is a far better sounding guitar. I've had over 20 stratocasters in my life and have never had one that is near the quality of the EJ.
Regarding the VG - I think the open tunings are the biggest draw...the humbucker, tele and ash strat sounds are OK...but I just don't think they're any great shakes. The 12 string option is pretty nice and the acoustic sound has many selections...but I'm not convinced they're of great value. Alot depends on the kind of music you play I guess. Anyway - don't rule out an EJ strat as you think about it all.
