Hey guys,
My friend is buying a new guitar (strat) but can't can't decide between the roadhouse and lone star. Any recommendations? Looking for around $800 range and a strat. :D

He needs to go try them out & choose the one that suits him best. I tried a Lonestar out in the shop. I didn't like the feel of the neck on that paticular one, so I ended up w/a Standard. If I had to choose between those 2, I think I would go w/the Roadhouse simply because I prefer the SSS pups. Might also consider a 2nd hand MIA. IMO bottom line, try them out first. Good luck.

I've had both. In fact, my last strat was a hybrid of the two. The Lonestar is a great instrument, but I found the volume jump from the neck to the bridge was rather annoying. The Pearly Gates has way too much output compared to the Texas Specials single coils. The pickup should almost have its own volume control. I rather like the SSS of the Roadhouse, except I would recommend tying the bridge single coil into the tone pot of the middle. That made a huge difference in my tone. There was still a lot of bite to the bridge, but a lot less ice pick tone.

When I said I had a Hybrid, what I did was swap the neck of the Roadhouse for the Lonestars. I prefer rosewood and SSS configuration. To take it a step further, I also replaced all the hardware with gold. My strat was an Alpine white. Looked awesome...

There is a good 12-minute youtube side by side comparison done a few weeks ago if you search "Fender Lonestar vs. Roadhouse." The guy purchased both with the idea of testing them and returning one. He played them both through a Mustang III using several clean and driven amp models and did a pretty good job of playing the exact same phrases for the comparison.

You can really hear a surprising difference in the two strats. The Roadhouse gives a very bright jangly tone while the Lone Star puts out a deeper warm tone. The reviewer thought the bridge pup in the Roadhouse was too bright and preferred the Pearly Gates which he raved about. On the other hand, he preferred the maple fretboard of the Roadhouse.

He does not declare a winner in the video, but in the comments section he admits he returned the Roadhouse and kept the Lone Star. I am currently considering the opposite: selling or trading my Lone Star for a Roadhouse! But if I can't pretty much trade even I will not bother.
