What an excellent resource we have here! I have some questions for the Fender reps, When and why did Fender start using the oil in foil caps instead of the Orange Drops in the reissues? Which of the different manufacturer pots used measured the quietest and which pots measured closest to spec? Will the variations in the measured specs give each guitar a slightly different sonic character?

Noted, would you relay those questions to someone inside or point me to a page that has that information?

Hi gmaslin,
I'm not sure how successfull I'd be, but if you post a pic of it I'll see if i can find anything/anyone who knows. I have the feeling that it may be a-- not well documented "tribal knowledge" thing, though.
Cheers,
rob

Rob, it's been a few weeks, any luck? If not, here's another question to lump on; Did any of the '62 reissue models after 2008 have colored jacket wire leads?

Hi gmaslin,
Sorry, after some initial inquiries, day to day biz got to me! I'll see if i can dig a little deeper and find any answers. I can tell you that as to questions beginning with "why", some reasons are more apparent than others and often times..."why" is lost in the shuffle and more often....in time. Nonetheless, never hurts to look into it.
Cheers,
rob

Hi Gmaslin et al,
I posed the post by you(gmaslin) to someone who has been intimately involved in the designs of our guitars for quite some time...at very least since the first American Standards were designed in the mid-80s. i consider him to be an expert and also am very hesitant to pose questions to him simply because i know that he has alot on his plate at all times. Nonetheless, he is a very gracious fellow and is always very willing to help when he can.

If i am reading his response correctly, we have to date, not been using the oil in the foil caps, but ceramic caps which is era correct (specifically for the 60's models). He is not certain that we ever did use orange drops on our reissues or when we might have stopped (if we did) and that it would take an amount of research to find that out.
I will quote him for the rest of what he said (i omitted one sentence as it seemed proprietary):
"The CTS pots that we use on Vintage are vintage correct from about the early 60s on and the earlier ones are not available. Guitar circuits are VERY primitive (non-critical) and date back to the 30s and 40s. Everything in the system, pots, caps and pickups interact to create the specific “personality” of each instrument. Traditionally tolerances on pots are +/- 20 % so they are all over the map. Eric Johnson hears differences in this range but most of us don’t. Suffice to say that we deem any of the components we buy to be acceptable for our instruments"

Hope that helps a bit.

Best regards,
rob

The thread has been dead for 7 years.
The V + digits has been used for multiple years.
Try customer support.

Fender retired all the old staff, and records are patchy, to say the least.
All the best ....
