...is almost a must-have for me. Ask me why; I rarely play in the highest registers. Interestingly, Lincoln Brewster (one of my favorites) spends lots of time playing those high notes and does well with 21 frets! Go figure.

I don't get past the 15th, ever.

Chop it off and have a strat that looks like a strat for me.

+1!

And if I ever truly need a 22nd fret......?

Well, that's why the Good Lord invented the Les Paul.

Considering the 22nd Fret on a Fender has only been around for twenty years, I never heard a story from Clapton, Hendrix, or Stevie Ray Vaughan complain about "only" having 21 frets...

I go higher than the 15th but usually only on the first three strings....21 frets is enough for me,on the American Standards I own,I hardly ever went there to the 22nd..

I don't care! 21 or 22 --> no difference to me, personally!
Next important step is 24!!! That's what I have my Ibanezes for!

I wish I had a Strat with 24 frets!! THAT would be useful!

I too don't think that having 21 or 22 frets is an issue. As DetroitBlues says, we never heard any complaints from Eric, Jimmi, or Stevie about missing frets. :)

If for some reason Fender started making Strats with 19 frets I wouldn't hesitate to buy one because a Strat is a Strat no matter the number of frets. Having said this I must also say that I tend to agree with Smokin' Frets and the 24th fret. I have a PRS SE Custom 24 and use the 24th fret often because it's two octaves above the open string. (Hmm.. I don't recall ever using the 23rd fret.) So it's not that we "need" a 24th fret but if a Strat did have a 24th fret I think we'd use it more often than we would the 22nd or 23rd.

Of course the significance of 22 frets, is that - with a bend - you can get up to the high E note. And as the guitar is basically tuned to Em, that can be significant. It gives our chosen instrument a full 4 octave range.

It's very difficult to fluidly push a 21 fret guitar up to that high E.

But of course, if you go nowhere near the dusty end, then it's not an issue is it?

I love the 22nd on my Charvel but I don´t miss it on my Blackmore. I think it has something to do with the feel and sound of a guitar, for me anyway.

Cheers,
Robin

I think if a strat had 24 frets the neck pickup would have to be relocated.

No, not if it's done right. If it's done right, the pole pieces would be right along the edge of a shelf over part of the pickup body. It would look weird to some, but I love having use of 2 full octaves up each string and would jump on a Hwy 1 w/ 24 frets in a heart-beat!

My Hwy 1 has a bit of a shelf starting starting towards the bottom end of the 22nd fret, so it's doable -- where there's a will, there's a way.

More frets, please!

Yo, m -- what's shakin'???

Some guitars go up to thirty frets
So, do not let the mystery of the 22nd Fret
be an Alfred Hitchcock nightmare for you.

Yep! But with 24 frets I would prefer 2 humbuckers anyway, so moving the neck humbucker slightly down would be no big deal. Or maybe make it a kind of Tom Delonge Strat with just a bridge HB or Bridge HB with middle SC and no neck pu at all.

That wouldn't be traditional, i know, but 24 frets wouldn't be traditional anyway ;)

A friend of mine from Basslab, Germany, builds guitars with up to 40 frets.
Dunno how you can actually play that but there's a Japanese guitar guru who REALLY uses them all!
