Does anyone know what causes the strings not to be centered on the neck? The strings start off dead center on the neck but about the 7th fret they start to move to the right so the high E from the 12th fret down is almost off the neck? It makes the high E hard play. Plus it buzzes in a lot of places. The neck is straight and the frets are in great condition. It is a 1988 but it was hardly ever played, very little fret ware. What would cause it to buzz so much?

Thanks,
Louie

You may need to adjust your truss rod.

Would that cause the strings to not be centered on the neck?

Do you have a picture? I can't figure it out as I wish  still, you might resolve both problems operating on the truss rod

From what you describ sounds like the neck is not sitting flush in the neck cavity and is cocked left or right. In your case probably left. This is not uncommon. You can try to corrct it yourself by loosening the neck screws and twisting the neck straight and holding it in that postion while tightening the screws. You may need someone to tighten the screws while you hold the neck in position. You may also need to clean out the neck cavity if there is laqure or some other obstruction. Take it to a tech if your not comfortable doing it yourself. If you bring it to someone also have him do a setup on it.

No I'm at work........I'll try tonight, but just image that you are looking at the strings from nut to bridge......the strings sit in the middle of the neck........but further down the strings start to veer to the right so that there is more room between the end of the neck and the low E ........and there is less room on the neck for the high E .......so when you you play the high E your finger falls off the neck

Maybe you should double check to see if the neck really is straight. If you can look at the strings and tell their not straight, then something is amiss somewhere big time.

Also make sure your strings are resting dead center on your saddles, this could cause some of the problem too.

I'm with mosvalve on this one, Fender necks get wacked out of alighnment all of the time.

loosen strings (or remove them) and loosen neck screws, check for obstructions in the neck pocket and re-tighten and I will bet ya its fixed.

I put on a new pickguard on a Hwy-1 Strat and didnt notice it needed to be trimed around the neck and it really messed up my string alighnment, a little work with an x-acto knife and a re-set of the neck and all is well.

it is one of the sweet things about Fenders, you can fix it yourself without a degree in engineering.

Sounds like a job for a good guitar tech!

This seemed to have been chronic in early Strats. It was on my '58. The string placement since has been modified to my understanding but the date of that change is not known to me. It's one of the things that's makes vintage less desirable.
