thanks TinleyJake! i think i am going to get the fat strat because i do like its tones with the humbucker. plus i think i will get the maple fingerboard(it looks amazing) with the new blizzard pearl paint job.i could get the exact same thing with the regular strat with the bridge would be the only diffrence.
i think i have made my choice, plus it will sound perfect with my new Fender FM212R amp that i got in january

In terms of versatility, the Fat Strat obviously wins out. However, I'm too big a fan of the bridge+middle sound and the bridge single coil with some distortion to want to lose that sound- just shows personal preference.

well when u want the bridge+middle pickups sound the humbucker splits so it sounds like the regular strat the only diffrence in sound is when u use the full humbucker in bridge pickup mode(no S-1 switching)!

I voted Fatstrat and here's why. Now that I've got my Highway hotrodded slightly with CS TX Specials and the five springs and the bridge saddles matching the 9.5 inch radius neck perfectly and the action low as I like it (Thanks Wild West Guitars for the install/setup) I can't imagine getting any other SSS Strat. The jumbo pickups make it bendy, the Texas Specials are blowing me away everyday with the Hendrix screams and the wicked growl in 2 and 4 with tone rolled back a bit and the beautiful clean notes and chords with very little hum . . . but I could see going for one of those wicked HSS Americans with the TexMexs and the Diamondbacks for some real high gain fun when in the mood. Trower runs TexMex in the bridge and if you put that in the neck and mid with the big Diamondback in the bridge that looks like a really versatile beast that would save money (tell your wife that) because a Gibson to get similar tone would cost more, see? Yep, I could definitely go for the new Standard American HSS to complement my little Hotrod Highway.

If you are only going to have one guitar and want to play heavy distortion AND want versatility the go with the Fat Strat.

I have an Am Deluxe Fat and after 30+ years of playing strictly Gibsons, my strat is becoming my main instrument. While I like the Humbucker on the strat it isn't my SG or my Les Paul. If I am really after a humbucker sound I switch axes 'cause some stuff sounds better with the strat and others sound better on the Gibsons.

BUT I am also finding that I REALLY want that SSS sound for that mid/bridge out of phase sound and so I'm looking at getting a split coil humbucker replacement.

Since the axe came with EMGs I'm looking at either the EMG 89 or the new 81TW which is based on their bridge EMG81.

I know that there are a lot of you out there that dislike EMGs but I'm not going back to passive on this axe. Has anyone had experience wtih the EMG 89? (the 81TW is too new, I'm sure)
