HAVE 2 AND 1/2 MIM STRATS. I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE KNEW WHAT THE BODY OF MY 93 STRAT WAS MADE OF #MN394806.
SEEMS TO BE A 2 PIECE BODY AND WHEN DID THEY STOP USING ROSEWOOD FOR THE FRETBOARDS?

Which 1/2 is the 1/2 a strat?

The body is alder, poplar or basswood. Fender still put out plenty of guitars with rosewood fingerboards.

THE 1/2 IS A 98 MIM SQUIRE BODY WITH A 93 MAPLE FRETBOARD NECK. HAVENT FOUND THE PARTS TO FINISH IT YET BUT STILL LOOKING. DONT THINK THE 93 IS BASEWOOD AS IT IS A LITTLE HEAVIER THAN MY 2006 SE. I THOUGHT THAT FENDER QUIT USING BRAZILIAN ROSEWOOD AND WENT TO A CHEAPER WOOD IN THE EARLY 90'S.

Wasn't Brazilian rosewood stopped in the late 90's? It's nothing a bit of dye won't sort out anyway.
Basswood varies in weight as does alder. Weight comparison is no judge.

I would imagine it's been a long time since Fender used Brazillian Rosewood on anything.

That is quite probably THE premium tonewood in (very limited) use today. Once common (or at least not unusual), now a top drawer product - maximum price. IF you can get it now, all sorts of restrictions and licenses required etc.

Even Indian Rosewood is now far from cheap. I'd love a classical guitar with solid Brazillian RW back and sides - but we're talking 5 Grand minimum just to get through the door. When I replaced my laminate wood Classical recently to an all solid wood guitar, I had to settle for Walnut..

A 98 MIM body would be made out of Poplar according to the Fender Frontline. As for Brazilian Rosewood, the last guitar with a standard one was the fingerboards for the first few runs of the SRV model, before they went to Pau Farroa. Prior to that, they stopped using Brazilian back in mid sixties. Of course that excludes Custom Shop Models, they will do almost anything you want...if you have the coin.

thank adey. if you want to look at an acoustic that has a rosewood back and sides you might look for a alverez from the late 70s or early 80s when they where still made by yari.
have a 5047 from 81 that is a rosewood back and sides and a maple top that is nice and the prices for used are not that much when compared to a martin or gibson.

Thanks mky.

I will get a rosewood Classical one day, but I expect it will be Indian rather than Brazillian. I understand that in the rush to get out stocks of the good stuff before legislation, poorly cured Brazillian Rosewood appeared on many instruments, only to crack and split. What a waste.

Infact, I've read that even vintage Braz RW intruments should be checked very carefully for cracking..
