Hi there!

Ordered my first electric guitar a few weeks back from my local music store and picked it up yesterday. Had a quick look at it at the store and the guitar looked fine so I bought it home. Today I had a closer look at it and found something that looked like there was some lacquer missing by the nut on the lower side. Took 2 photos of it to post here, to ask you guys what you think and would have done in my situation, but the photos seems to reveal more than I can see with naked eye..

ImageImage

Its a classic player '60s, brand new, full price. Have to add that the rest of the guitar looks flawless.

Take it back mate. You want an exchange. Also you want to pick the guitar you exchange it for. That way you can go over it to make sure all is right.

Shipping damage? Something floating around inside the box? Not properly packaged whatever way you look at it.

It has not been done in the factory. There´s a new nut put in and sanded down (see fretboard-Fender don´t sand them down.). Fretboard cracked and chipped.
Maybe the nut broke and the seller put in a new one.
Get a new guitar.

Cheers,
Robin

Sharp eyes there Robin. Very astute.
Also it looks to me that when they tried to remove the nut they partially split the fretboard. Probably on the first attempt.

Did you buy this guitar new Teddy?

+1 on what both said, and on taking it back

Thank you all for your reply's. The guitar is supposed to be brand new, they even had to order it for me. Will send the photos to the store just to see what they say, but the guitar is going back.

Thanks

Received a reply to my email now from the store and they apologize that they missed the injury and welcome me back to the store. Also, they have sent my photos to fender.

If I were the store owner...I'd be asking..."ummm...we inspected the guitar, checked the setup, and did a quick video of the guitar before turning it over to you and that damage was not there. What happened to the guitar after it left the store? (knowing if I were the store owner, the guitar would have been thoroughly inspected and the setup checked and a quick video made before the customer ever touched the guitar to avoid problems such as this.)"

Granted, things happen. I'm not accusing you of anything, just preparing your for the visit!

If they have security video cams in the store, if this is how you received the guitar, the video cam may yield a few frames of the damage! So, if this is how the guitar was turned over to you, and they balk and they have video cams in the store, I'd ask them to check the video cams if the guitar was near a cam!

Guitar shops around here have extensive video cams to prevent employee and customer theft, plus for issues like this!

I wont debate what I have done and not done since I cant prove anything anyway. It was placed in the included gig bag the whole time from shop to hobby room. But I cant prove it. It was the salesman that put the guitar in the gig bag.

Swedish law says (I live in Sweden) that the first year, stores must prove that the product was flawless and working at the sale moment. If they cant do that, the customer have all the rights to get a new product or a repair depending on how soon you report the faulty product. Since they asked me in the email if I could return with the guitar I guess they don't know if there was a damage or not.

That law can of course be exploited. Am I one of those idiots how buy expensive stuff, break it with or without intention and go cry at the store blaming the people that sold me the product?

If I were a store owner I wouldnt sell broken guitars. I would do a quality control right when I unpack newly arrived products, just as I do for a living at a factory. Just like I did when I got home where I could do it in peace and quiet. That was a little late, but I learn every day.

Thats impact damage. Nothing more, nothing less. And hardly well repaired - the fretboard is still split. Probably done by a store employee (maybe a set-up tech) who's clouted it, patched it up then sent it out probably without telling his boss.

He's probably hoping you couldn't be bothered to send it back. It's amazing what some people will accept..

You've got a over active imagination. Do you really believe you could see a 1/8th inch chip in the corner of a fretboard through a store cam?

Under Swiss law, they better have photographic evidence of the guitar before it left the store -- it's the only way they can prove they did not sell the buyer a defective guitar. If the camera is hi-rez, yes, I do believe the image can be zoomed to reveal the truth!

Can't wait to hear how this turns out!
