I really like the Tex-Mex pickups that are in the JV Strat and the Roadwarn series. How do the Fat 50s compare, how are they different and would I like like them better than the Tex-Mex pups?

Fat 50's specs are...neck 6.0k,middle 6.3k, bridge 6.2k...and they are wound on vintage fibre type of bobbin with cloth wire and hand beveled magnets. Tex Mex specs are ... neck 6.4k, middle 6.4k, bridge 7.4k...wound on a plastic type of bobbin. Both are fine pickups, the Tex Mex have extra output compared to the Fat 50's which I think is the main difference.

Thanks for the great answer. I'm guessing that it means that the TEx-Mex are a little brighter?

The American Standard HSS also boasted Tex-Mex pickups.

Tex Mex are over wound which will give you a slight decrease in highs and a increase in the mids. Check out Lindy Fralins site for information on Strat pickups and the effects of over winding. He has graphs showing what will happen to your highs and mids when winding are increased.

They do. I have one. Sounds really nice. Looking for different voice for one of me guitars. I think the Fat 50's are the ones for me.

Fat 50's will go in every project I decide to do from here on out. This is the sound I like.
