They are great huh..... I am stoked I took the advice too, lovely balanced quacky real strat sound huh... Thx Arjay!! I must also point out I just put a set of Don Mare hand wound Super Sports in another strat and my god if you like the fat 50's you'll love these things, like the fat 50's but a bit more touch dynamics and hotter, like a mix in between Texas specials and fat 50's. Incredible pups.

Fat 50s were originally found on Custom Shop Showmasters, here's the description:

Quote:
" Do you want the sound of a ' 50s Strat® , but with a little bit more attitude? Check out the Custom Shop Fat ' 50s. These calibrated pickups are constructed with hand beveled, staggered, Alnico 5 magnets and Formvar wire on the coils. The Fat ' 50s deliver enhanced bass response without the harsh mid-range. The middle pickup is reverse wound/ reverse polarity for hum canceling in positions 2 & 4. The blues never sounded so sweet. OEM on Custom Shop Showmaster Series Stratocasters® . Available in white only*."

"Showmasters featured two Fat 50s with black pickup covers.

Does anyone know if the Fat Fifties on the 2012 American Standard have a lowered G string magnet pole?

Fender sells the Fat 50's with white covers though the ones found on the CS Showmasters are black. Why :?:

What difference does it make?

The Fat '50s pickups use a standard-sized bobbin and will accommodate any single-coil pickup cover in any color that Fender sells as with my custom-built Mary Kaye hardtail......

The pickup set provided white covers which were easily swapped for aged white prior to installation.

Wow, that custom built Mary Kaye is flat out gorgeous, Arjay. Congrats!

I'm a Fat 50s convert, too. Got a set in an American Vintage Thin-skin '61 Strat and they have been one of my favorite Custom Shop pickups sets ever since.

I really like the Tex-Mex pickups that are in the JV Strat and the Roadwarn series. How do the Fat 50s compare, how are they different and would I like like them better than the Tex-Mex pups?

I plan on Fat 50's for my next project. I am re-converting my Highway 1 back to SSS. I am very impressed with the tone I have heard from them.

Quick question...can you change the pick-up covers on them?

Fat 50's specs are...neck 6.0k,middle 6.3k, bridge 6.2k...and they are wound on vintage fibre type of bobbin with cloth wire and hand beveled magnets. Tex Mex specs are ... neck 6.4k, middle 6.4k, bridge 7.4k...wound on a plastic type of bobbin. Both are fine pickups, the Tex Mex have extra output compared to the Fat 50's which I think is the main difference.
