Basically what the title says.

The Mustang's design is something of a hassle to deal with. The pickup selector switches always get in the way of my strumming and if I hit it just slightly they go out of phase and the sound cuts out. Also, there's no bottom to any of the sounds. (Twangy beyond comfort, for me anyway). And the Strat just has that extra punch (and also easier design and a Tremelo system that works and doesn't knock your guitar frightfully out of tune.) Also, the Mustang is hard to keep in tune regularly anyway.

You have to do what makes you happy. If the Mustang is not doing it for you then get rid of it.

Hmm, well, I think I might do it. However, I'm wondering about the MIM Strats. You see, they cost 400 and my Mustang was 700. I'm just making sure I'm not trading it in for something less worth while. (But I do love strats everytime I play them in Guitar Center.)

You could try to trade for a Highway 1.

Yeah, but I'll probably only be able to afford to get a Standard though. Plus, the Mustang has a little ding on the back of it, so that'll make the trade in value a little lower.

You could try to sell it to a private party, then take the cash and buy something else.

if/when I get a MIM Strat, how do I get the maple to shine and be as smooth as the maple on a higher end strat? Or do they do that to all maple fretboards now?

You can find strats that have a finished neck and ones that don't. You probably just looked at one that was natural. My 2000 model standard came finished. But after awhile I was quick to sand that crap off, the finish get's too sticky. Thats your preference though.

Trading a Mustang for a standard strat???

Sounds like an upgrade to me. I wouldn't worry too much about the price difference. In my opinion their both equal as far as value goes. It's just that fender sells more strats than they do mustangs, so they can give them to you at a cheaper price.. In fact, it might cost fender alittle more to make the mustang, which is why it's alittle higher.

The strat would definetly be an upgrade to the mustang in my opinion.

Another thing is, parts for that strat will be alot easier to find.

Wow, I forgot I started this thread, haha.

Anyways, I'm planning on going through with the trade soon! I really hope I don't get screwed over in trading though. Guitar Center usually has given us practically nothing for other things...what do you guys think? Do you think the Fender Mustang (with $700 price tag) is sufficient to get almost enough for the MIM Strat (with a $400 price tag)?

If you have an older Mustang, I would keep it. It is a neat little guitar. New Stratocasters are a dime a dozen, and can be found anywhere. You can locate one in any guitar store you name, but an old Mustang is much more rare. Plus older Fenders never die, they just sound better!!
