Hello all,

I have a question in regards to replacing the push-button switch on a Players Deluxe Stratocaster with a mini-toggle switch. Please forgive my noobity with many questions, as I am very new to this.

I have learned that the standard push-button switch is of the dual-position, dual-throw (DPDT) type, and I have seen that this type of mini-toggle switch is available for guitars. So my first question is: What type of DPDT mini-toggle would I need to get... would it be an On-On type (which is what I assume I should get), or an On-Off-On type? I assume it should be On-On, but I'd like to know for sure before I go ahead and order parts.

And the other part of the question... I have seen in the service diagram that there are only 2 wires that go to the standard push-button switch. I assume it would be the same with the new toggle switch? What are the chances that the pins are numbered the same on both switches, so it's simply a matter of putting the wires in the same positions on the new switch? Or would it take extra wiring for the new toggle-type switch?

And lastly, for testing purposes is there a way I'd be able to test the new switch (by sound) while it's all apart to see if it's working? In case, for instance, the pins didn't match and I'd need to try a different configuration.

Hard as it is to believe, I haven't been able to find the specifics for exactly how to go about this change, so any and all help is much appreciated. Thanks to all the guitar gurus who might be able to help!

DPDT means double pole/double throw, not dual position/double throw. See the switch schematic here:

Welcome.

It would simply be an, "On-On" type.

The pin assignment would be the same; no extra wiring is required. You could even get away with a SPDT switch as the switch itself is only used for 'manually' turning on and off the bridge pickup, thus overriding the pickup selector switch.

For testing purposes, all you'd have to do is gently tap a polepiece of the bridge pickup to see if it's working with the pickguard still off the guitar.

You're welcome.

Actually, a simple on-off switch (SPST) will work as there is only one pole used on the existing switch, and it's either open or closed.

So to take it a bit further, as shimmilou and Martian said, it really is the simplest kind of switch: a single-pole on-off switch? That does make it easy. And thanks bluesky for the diagram & explanation, it really is what I need to help understand!

I went ahead and ordered a DPDT switch because it was the only kind they had in the style I wanted. It may be more than I need, but at least some options will be there if I decide on more complex modifications later. What would that be? I don't know! But the help here has gotten me started and I appreciate it. I will take some before and after pictures once it's all done. It's just to recreate my new guitar in the style of one I had 20+ years ago (not a Fender, but an imitation style), so I'll be sure and put some pictures up. Now, playing it...that's another matter altogether!

OP you do know that the PP switch allows you pickup configurations which are not reachable with only a 5 way switch....

That being said, I deleted mine on a crimson strat, actually put in SCN pups and used the three vintage pups in the crimson for my Stratopartster Build I.. I did use 2 TBX controls for tone which solved my problem of not liking the pick ups. I had found them lacking in versatility but not with a TBX and a 220 cap....
As far as wiring up for the TBX, Premier Guitar online did a DIY.
As I also must add Andy Big Hair was the electronic schematic help...
Speaking of that, I'm back in the process of redoing pickguard and wiring on Strato #II

As promised, before:

Don't mind the missing knob; I'm waiting for a replacement.

So, all in all, it wasn't too bad. I was glad I wasn't re-using the old pickguard and have to mess with getting the old switch housing/fixture off. Now I have a perfect Deluxe Players tortoiseshell pickguard with the protective film still on and pushbutton installed for the offering.

Oh yes, 53magnatone, I do understand. It's working with the new switch as well.

I had posted last night in-process with a question regarding the wires to the new switch being reversed from the service diagram and others, but I deleted it. Even though I marked the wires as one being "middle" from the old pushbutton switch, and reconnected them in the same fashion on the new switch, I noticed that the wiring was reversed with respect to vol pot/5-way VS. middle/outside lug on the switch (Even though I marked the wires coming off the original and put them back the same way). I posted a concern about it asking for advice, but after examing the wiring layout I decided it's only a hot-wire switch and wouldn't make any difference.

I hope that's true, anyway. In the end, thanks to all the kind guitar gurus and enthusiasts who found time to help me out.
