So I just watched the Fender Select video on this website which entails a rich collector playboy who comes back home to his lavish bachelor pad with his hot date and his Fender Select guitar. This video made my stomach sick. Do people in Fender really sit around the table discussing how we need to create a guitar for the elite? The US economy continues to struggle everyday, I see friends of mine in and out of work, layoffs all around us, people struggling the pay their mortgages but Fender sees the need to create a series that caters to collectors? Aren't these things made to be played??? or hung on the wall?

I know they have the more economical Squire brand but I'll stick to American made, no matter what people think of our quality. I'd rather support people here. ..sorry..nothing against the foreign markets but I wanna see my friends keep their jobs.

Is it just me or does someone else see a problem here?

Just like Gibson and a few other manufacturers' maintain outrageous pricing and profit margins on their not totally American, "pretty" guitars which somehow continue to sell in this dismal economy, Fender is evidently trying to tap into this mindset/market too. Even if Fender doesn't gain any significant foothold with this line, they won't be losing any significant money either. The suits obviously figured it's worth a shot.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

Other than the video being just plain stupid, what's the problem? Its a catchy sales pitch. The Select is more expensive than an American Deluxe but less expensive than a Custom Shop Team Built. Why would anyone not buy a Select to play? Its made in America. I think you are the one with the problem.

I don't think you are getting the point. Fender knows the only ones spending money today are the ones with it. Capishe? They are not thinking about the everyday Joe's like you and me. You think Leo Fender would be proud of this type of marketing?

I get it all too well. I have money because I work my butt off for it, and I am going to spend it if I want to on what I want to spend it on. As far as Fender marketing goes, I suggest you take a look at some of the marketing that Fender did in the 60's, particularly the work of Bob Perine.

You'll see jet fighter pilots, sky divers, scuba divers, people on buses, people in fancy cars, etc. all with their Fender guitars and amps. Would you call them people with money or everyday Joes? In case you hadn't noticed, Fender has Fender branded products that span the entire price range.

Its all an ad campaign. You don't like it? Don't buy the product.

"I have money because I work my butt off for it". Lol I hear you buddy, I'm right here with you. I personally love the Select series. It's basically an American Deluxe with a flame maple top. I love my American Deluxe. My next guitar will be a Fender Select. As far as the video is concerned, I think it is appropriate for the price point. I think there are more important issues to worry about.

I think the Select Series showcase some beautiful pieces of wood and they must play wonderfully. However, at those prices, I would be considering picking up a couple of used AVRIs or a used Custom Shop. But that's just dopey ol me...

Anyway, I have no issues with Fender making high-end guitars. The Custom Shop has been around for a long time. Should all those CS guitars that cost 3x-4x what a Select costs be damned as well? I mean where would you draw the line? At the Artist Series? The notion that it's evil or bad is just silly...they're doing their best to make money!
