Hey. I'm new here.

I've recently restored a Squier Bullet. Actually, it says 'Squier Bullet 1' on the headstock - no mention of Strat. Anyway, I had to re-wire everything because it was in pretty rough shape, and I was just wondering if I could get some opinions on whether or not I should slap a Bill Lawrence USA humbucker in the bridge position. I have one laying around from an old guitar. Yes, I am aware of the whole Bill Lawrence VS Bill Lawrence USA thing. I play grunge stuff mostly [a lot of Toadies]. Suggestions?

Sorry - here are the pics.

It's a weird combo, with the Tele neck, Strat body, Fender-Stamped bridge saddles, Gotoh Tuners, and the input jack where the other pot usually is.

Hi BillyBlurst,

Check that the body routing will allow a hum-bucker to fit. You will also need a new pick guard for the hum-bucker, and it looks like an unusual pick guard on your guitar, a standard pick guard might not fit. I really love the BL pups, I have two in a guitar and they sound terrific, especially for distortion. The BL will probably not match up well with your existing mid and neck pups, but I'm sure it will sound great by itself.

Hey shimmilou,

Thanks for the reply. The body's not routed for a humbucker, but I've done body routing before so I'm not too worried about that. The pickguard, like you said, is a weird shape, so I think I'm just going to cut the hole bigger to fit the humbucker. I was messing around on it today with it cranked, and I think I am going to swap-out the single-coil for the BL.

This is a weird guitar, man. The different tones on the pickups is all over the place:

Neck - SUPER bass, almost overpoweringly
Neck + Middle - SUPER treble
Middle - Nice, round tone
Middle + Bridge - Less round, little more bite
Bridge - Decent bite, but not a lot of tone

That combined with all of the other weird stuff and the slab body [no contours whatsoever - even in the back], I haven't seen another one like it. Has anyone else? I told someone the serial once, and he said it was a MIJ from the mid-'80s, but I don't know for sure. Serial's E507485. If anybody knows something about these, I'd really appreciate it. Curious.

If I modified this guitar, I'd get a whole new pickguard and store the original. Personally I wouldn't do a thing to this guitar. It's probably not rare, but it's a bit of an oddball and I would attempt to preserve it as much as I could.

I've seen these before. It has the CBS era strat body with the 2 control knobs and the front jack. It has a telecaster neck. It's from the mid 80's. It seemed like they used the existing stock pile of CBS strat and tele parts, slapped them together and called it a bullet. The earliest one's had the word Fender in large print and the word Squier in smaller print. It was made around the time of Fender's move from Japan back to California. Transitional period.

Although it says Squier, I believe it's made with CBS era (MIJ) Fender parts.
