put your guitar through a good tube amp and crank it, turn down the tone controls on the guitar, using other pickups besides the bridge, add an S1 switch

Tubescreamer type pedal would do the trick - especially if you've got a tube amp.

Little advice if you go this route - it's cheaper to go with a Visual Sound Route 808 or Double Trouble (think Tubescreamer x 2). I got the Double Trouble for around the same cost of a Tubescreamer (especially avoid the Ibanez Tonelok TS-7 models, they sound ok but they're crap)

The VS pedals above are clones of the TS-808, but with a few improvements - 1) more output, 2) switchable bass boost, 3) a better buffer circuit to prevent loss of highs with long cable runs or multiple pedals, and 4)in the case of the Double Trouble, there's also a noise reduction circuit inside that can be adjusted with a screwdriver.

I am using a Hardwire CM2 and it has a nice eq and gets a good thick tone out of my amps. I also use a MXR 10 band eq to beef it up. I usually use 12's and tune down a half step on one of my strats for really thick tone. On another strat I have 11's and standard tuning. I usually get the thickest tone without using a pick. I play sorta flamenco style and use my fingers and the tops of my fingernails sometimes. A pick will thin up the tone but I just adjust accordingly. I also use an EH Soul Preacher and it thickens up the tone as well.

The amps I am using now are a Blues Deluxe Reissue with a C-Rex, Blues Deville with 2-Ragin Cajuns and 2-Eminence Legends. Also have an Egnater Tweaker 15 with 2-Texas Heats. I use a volume pedal as well and that allows me to crank the amps up a little bit to get the tubes hot and the volume pedal gives me a lttle more control overall.
