I could live with just one guitar, but I would have a hard time deciding on which one to keep. All my guitars bring something different when I play them. I do have one that could play all the music I play.

Me too, every one of my Strats have different pickups in them, and if they didn't,the '57,'62 AVRIs and the '62 Hot Rod would all three have the same pups, and sound much the same, the others are different enough with the pups they have...so I have seven Strats that sound different enough to make you know you're playing a different guitar, that and the necks are all different also.
The '62 pictured just has the best of everything.

I probably could scrape by with just my Am. deluxe but I still like to play my MIM Strat.

This is a tough one - there's so many variations on the model.

I can honestly say as of now, I only need one strat. I got it because I wanted something different from the humbucker/set neck sound that I've favored for the better part of the last 15 years.

I chose a 2011 American Deluxe. To me it's the perfect strat - I love the sound of the pickups - to my ears they have the Strat sound, but without the noise of traditional single coils. It's also versatile enough that I could use it for the higher gain sounds I typically rely on humbuckers for - it's a bit thinner sounding than my Gibsons and my Gretsch, but gets close enough I could get by on it as my only guitar if I had to.

If I didn't already have 3 other guitars with humbuckers, I'd probably also want an HSS strat or a blacktop strat.

I doubt it, but luckily, I don't have to. I have several Strats with different pickup configurations and I like them all.

Three examples:

Hmmm. Maple and humbuckers!

I've put some thought into this and I realized that it's a pretty hard question, but if push came to shove, I'd I keep my green Clapton Strat.

Yeah i could live with just one strat my EC model. It does everything i'd want, but in saying that i ideally would want dozens. But not just strats! In my idea of heaven i'd have loads and loads of LP's, SG's, Tele's, vintage Gibson archtops and...! I've got a book "The Chinery Collection" the guitar collection of the late Scott Chinery and when you look at that you just say "I want that! and that! and that!"

There will never be a cure for G.A.S! Bad enough with guitars but ideally i'd have tons of amps too, vintage Fender's and Marshall's and Hi-Watt's and Vox's OH! there's no end to this longing!!! It's terrible!

Yes. But I'm happy I don't have to.

The reason I brought this up... Screaming Armadillo said that another member,Jim Bordner I think it was, felt like it would be best to devote all your playing and practice time on one instrument, much like concert violinists do I guess...

I think it might have been Ceri who relayed that story about Jim, rather than SA; but yes, that was the gist of it.

I think it's an interesting issue: whether to use different guitars for different sounds or search for one "versatile" instrument that covers all our needs. And then get so close to it that it becomes like a part of our body, with all of its quirks and individuality.

I like the concept - but I like playing lots of different guitars too! :D

Cheers - C

A Strat can get quite a few different sounds: 3 pickups in different positions, volume control, and tone controls. Add in the "in between" switch positions and where you actually strum the strings and there's a lot to work with on a single Strat.

I could easily get by with just one strat - my '62 AVRI. I lust after other strats for cosmetic reasons, but the '62 AVRI really has it all for me. I've also got my original strat, a 1980 model, but I hardly every play it anymore.
