Well, for starters Blackie when?

They got swapped and changed as needed to keep the guitar going.

Your best bet is to find a set up vintage style pickups that you feel get the sound you're after and go with those.

Personally I tried a set of Bare Knuckle Slowhand pickups and was pretty impressed, then again I also used to get some pretty good Ocean Boulevard tones using a partsocaster with Fender CS54 pickups in it....

You can also put Gold LSes or VNs with TBX and MDX circuits for the Clapton stuff from 1986 to the present day though EC was seen playing traditional Strats in many occasions (Chiddingfold, Surrey 2004).

As ZZDoc says "Let's allow him some get acquainted time with his Chevy before we turn in into a Ferrari".

AdrianJordanMusic,

I'm inclined to agree with you. I built a '50s style Strat with a EC Strat neck, a black HWY1 body and bridge and CS '54 pickups. It totally nailed EC sound from the '70s.

Sadly I missed playing my Clapton Strat, my 50th Anniversary Am. Series and my Hwy1, so I put everything back the way it was.

I have a better suggestion. Build it. I'd use a black Hwy1 body and buff it up to a nice shine. It will look more like an old Strat (I've done this).

I'd also go with the CS '54s. They sound very much like a vintage Strat from the '50s. They aren't reversed wound in the middle, but you'll get that Bell Bottom Blues sound everyone loves.

I did this and loved it. Unfortunately I missed playing my other guitars that I canabolized. So I took it apart.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot Paris, I really appreciate it.

I have a 57 re-issue body and neck already.

I am looking for that 70's Clapton sound.

So you think CS 54's in a single ply 8 hole pickguard?

Did you have a 3 or 5 way switch?

Thanks again!!!

Yes about the PUPs and pick guard. I went with a 5 way switch. You can still use a 3 way switch and wedge the toggle in-between, but you'll get tired of fighting with it. I had a '77 Strat with a 3 way switch and it got old fast. I swapped it out with a 5 way pretty quick.

Is the '57 Reissue a nitro paint job or Urathane?

One of the reasons I liked the Hwy1 body is that there is no clear coat and it will wear threw nicely.

I'm glad I could help. I love guitar projects. I only wish that I had the money to do all of my dream guitars.

My 57-reissue has
Color: (806) Black (Nitro-Cellulose Lacquer)
Tinted Maple (Nitro-Cellulose Lacquer, “V” Shape)

I originally bought it as a Gilmour project.
My wife surprised the hell out of me for my birthday and bought me the real thing.
I don't want to get rid of my 57, so I thought I would turn it into my own Blackie.

I wish I had the pups that came with the 57 originally.

This place has a great "loaded" pickguard that I might get.
